Main Purpose of Job:

The British High Commission is looking for a multi-talented individual to join us as an Intern for 6 months, working principally on regional security policy.

As an intern at the British High Commission, you will be part of our vibrant and dynamic staff, focused on working to achieve the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) key objectives in T&T.  You will work alongside the Regional Security Policy lead, but also be expected to get involved with activities across other High Commission teams, including Corporate Services, the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), and our Political/Economics and Consular departments.

You will be expected to execute assigned tasks efficiently, meeting deadlines and working independently, in a flexible working environment.  You will represent the British High Commission externally and need to use good judgement and professionalism to get the job done successfully.  You will have the opportunity to work on a number of projects, as well as to gain general experience of life in a busy diplomatic mission.  It will be essential to integrate well and to work as a team player, following protocols and adhering to the core behaviours and values of the FCDO.

The applicant must have the legal status to live and work in Trinidad and Tobago.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Working alongside the Regional Security Policy lead, you will undertake the following in respect of policy support and research:

  • Assist in researching and analysing security trends in the Caribbean region.
  • Support the drafting of policy briefs, reports and presentations on regional security issues.
  • Monitor developments in regional security policies and provide updates.
  • Help coordinate with various stakeholders, including embassies, international organisations and government agencies.
  • Attend meetings and take notes for internal distribution and follow-up actions.
  • ·Assist in organising workshops, seminars and conferences related to regional security.

In respect of policy coordination and stakeholder engagement, you will be expected to:

  • Assist in coordinating regional security projects, ensuring that timelines and deliverables are met.
  • Engage with regional partners and stakeholders to facilitate project implementation.
  • Track and report on project progress, including budget and resource management.
  • Support the development of project proposals and funding applications.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Fulfil tasks set out by supervisors from several departments.
  • Attend meetings and take minutes.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for project activity.

• Strong communication skills, verbal and written; to be able to draft policy briefs, reports and other documents.
• Research and analysis aptitude, critical thinking and attention to detail: the ability to gather, evaluate and interpret data effectively.
• Strong organizational skills and time management ability, to be able to manage multiple tasks efficiently and achieve deadlines - often working without direct supervision.
• Strong skills in the use of Microsoft applications

• Must have the legal status to live and work in Trinidad and Tobago

Working Patterns:

Working hours: Monday-Thursday 0730-1600, Friday 0730-1230.  There is some flexibility with working hours and working from home, subject to operational requirements and commitments, in agreement with line/senior management.  You may occasionally be required to attend official functions outside working hours for which you would be entitled time off in lieu, in agreement with your line manager.
