Security

The British Embassy in Berne is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a full-time Duty Security Officer. The successful candidate will be responsible for general embassy security work, reception and telephone duties, welcoming visitors to the Embassy and on occasion driving official vehicles.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for:

  • Providing a secure working environment for FCO Staff.

  • Security, Fire, First Aid and Health & Safety Officer.

  • Handling telephone calls and visitors.

  • Deputy Driving duties, Mail collection and delivery.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Security

  • Site and personnel security, escorting staff, security advisor.

  • Screen visitors, contractors and employees entering the building.

  • Provide a high level customer service at Reception and assist the public with general enquiries.

  • Scan and process all incoming mail.

  • Regularly test all the alarm systems in the Embassy.

  • Planning and emergency preparation.

  • Ensure the Embassy and Residence are concurrent with FCO standards and protocols.

  • Review security standards and procedures, implement and educate staff on any changes.

  • Liaise with local authorities and friendly missions.

  • Patrol the Embassy and Residence.

  • Provide security at Embassy functions and events.

  • Part of a crisis management team.

Driving

  •  Function as a professional back-up driver for e.g. Ambassador or Deputy Head of Mission.

  • Flexibility to work 100% when circumstances require.

Corporate Services

  • Support Corporate Services when required.


  • Clear and professional communication.

  • Ability to handle pressure and to identify opportunities and deliver solutions.

  • No previous convictions / clean record.

  • Knows how to use Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
  • Basic/intermediate level of German and/or French (oral and written).


  • Experience in Security, Health and Safety and implementing processes.

  • Valid Swiss driving licence.

This is a 1-year part-time position of 30 hours net per week, subject to a probation period of 3 months. Working hours are based on shifts (either 07.30-13.30 or 12.00-18.00)

Monthly salary for this position is 4101 CHF gross, payable 13 times a year.

The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys an average of 14 public holidays per year. Specific training and mentoring for the role will be provided for the successful candidate. This may include training in London and the European region.

The successful candidate is expected to start work in early November 2018 and will be subject to professional background and security clearance.
