Public Diplomacy

Main purpose of job:

To support the planning and delivery of the UK government’s public diplomacy events around Rugby World Cup 2019 and Tokyo 2020.  Working with the project lead, colleagues and partners in Japan and the UK, support the development of the content for our programme of events.


Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:


This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the UK government’s series of activation spanning from the Rugby World Cup 2019 through to the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic period. The jobholder will work in coordination with the Head of Events to support high-level planning and delivery of public diplomacy events during these important sporting moments in Japan. Innovation and creativity will be key to continue a joined-up narrative delivering on wide-ranging HMG objectives across this timeframe. They will work with HMG and HMG-related stakeholders to help plan and schedule content.


Specifically the jobholder will:


-         Work with the Department for International Trade (DIT) World Events team in London, and any local delivery partners to help realise the events.  They will also liaise with the British Olympic Association and Paralympic Association as necessary to ensure coordination with the teams’ public facing activity.


-         Play the leading role in developing the publicity and communications plan for the events, working closely with the Media, Communications and Marketing section of the Embassy, as well as DIT London, British Council and other key HMG stakeholders.


-         Play a central role in local contractor management for the delivery of the events, working closely with colleagues in London, the event management company and local stakeholders.  They will be responsible for logistical coordination to ensure smooth delivery of the operational aspects of the events, including scheduling and coordinating guest lists.


-         Maintain flexibility to take on evolving tasks and challenges, including some administrative support at key moments and delivery of visit programmes during planning and execution stages of the project.


  • Native Japanese speaker
  • Fluent English with TOEIC score of 800 points or above
  • Events management experience.
  • PR, Marketing and Communications experience.
  • Contractor and stakeholder management experience.
  • Resilience to work under pressure over an extended period.
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills to conduct duties effectively.
  • Flexible, dependable, enthusiastic and customer focused and enjoy taking on challenging responsibilities.

  • Experience of working in English and Japanese speaking environments
