Communications, Press and Media
  • To drive the High Commission’s communications work, identifying media opportunities and maximising our public diplomacy output across traditional and social media. Support the High Commissioner by researching, analysing and advising on Fiji politics including trends.
  • Lead on developing and implementing the High Commission’s communications strategy. Identify opportunities to maximise coverage of public diplomacy outputs through varying platforms including traditional and new media.
  • Working closely with the Head of Political Affairs, deliver research and reports on areas of interest for the political team. Assist in liaising with various contacts to set up calls and meetings. Offer cover and support to colleagues during peak periods. Provide cover for senior political officers as required.
  • Monitor media activity for all areas of interest and report accordingly to senior officers. Deliver daily oral press briefing to political team and written weekly media update to London. Coordinate responses to public inquiries (email/social media/letters).
  • Using media and communications expertise, contribute to the development of concepts and implementation of projects led by senior political officers.   
  • Provide information and advice to the High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner on all aspects of internal politics in Fiji.
  • Engage and actively maintain the embassy’s network of contacts across British charities and NGOs active in Fiji;
  • Manage the High Commission’s social media and online channels (Facebook, Twitter, online blogs, etc.) ensuring good coverage for events and priority issues. Monitor social media channels and report impact data. Coordinate and produce high quality digital content, including video (using Adobe In Design, Adobe Premiere Elements, photo and video editing programmes);
  • Lead on administrative tasks for the communications team which include corporate payments (subscriptions) and management of contacts database. Ensure that production of branding products (business cards, flyers etc.) are coordinated.
  • Contribute to public diplomacy projects under the coordination of senior media and press officers for all areas of interest for the High Commission (including political, trade and programme and defence engagements, etc).
  • Be a part of communication team delivering bespoke digital campaigns and oversee High Commission events planning and delivery.
  • Experience in communications work using a variety of new and traditional media platforms
  • Strong interest in strategic communications
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with strong customer focus
  • Good judgment and strategic awareness, to understand how the UK can best promote it’s messages.
  • Personal drive and the ability to be a self-starter as well as a team player; focus on delivery and ability to reprioritise and deal with a changing environment.
  • Fluent English and Fijian language skills, both written and spoken
  • Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office, Social media management (Facebook, Twitter, etc), and photo/video editing programmes.
  • Experience of working in an international/multi-cultural organisation would be an advantage
