The Communications Team is responsible for managing the public profile of the British Consulate-General in South China. The Senior Communications Officer has an important role in promoting the UK’s ‘soft power’ messages across China. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and delivering public diplomacy projects that support the UK’s messages, executing campaigns and running events that engage and influence our target audiences The jobholder will also be tasked with forging and maintaining contacts with a network of journalists and media professionals in the region.

 

The UK government has globally launched the GREAT Britain Campaign which showcases the very best of what Britain has to offer; to encourage the world to visit, study and do business with the UK. The Senior Communications Officer will lead on the execution of new exciting opportunities to create further impact of the UK in South China toward UK’s trade, investment and tourism objectives.  The jobholder’s role will work closely with a number of partners including Department for International Trade to ensure that public diplomacy messages make a significant contribution to this agenda.  

 

The successful candidate will need to have a proven track record in delivering projects from planning to evaluation, along with excellent organisational skills.  The successful applicant will need to demonstrate ideas, initiative and passion to maximise the impact of our communications across all media channels. S/he will need to have excellent team-working, communications and organisational skills. S/he will need to have good understanding of local and foreign media in south China, be creative in identifying opportunities to promote the UK’s prosperity agenda and finding ways to maximise the impact of these messages, capitalising on the public diplomacy campaign to promote the best of Britain.

 

Delivering high impact campaigns, events and visits - 45%

  • Manage the design, delivery and evaluation of public diplomacy activities in line with the UK’s objectives
  • Carrying out GREAT-branded campaign events across a range of traditional and digital media relevant to the local context and in line with national campaigns to promote UK strengths in areas including trade and investment, science and innovation, tourism and education
  • Manage the production of campaign related materials, including printed materials, venue set-up, digital content and other decoration materials, etc.
  • Monitor and report the results of public diplomacy activity by providing timely and accurate evaluation reports to the FCO Communications Network

 

Media handling - 30%

  • Helping to build a network of local journalists and media professionals to increase the profile of public diplomacy activities, including those active in press, broadcast media, internet and social media
  • Understanding local media organisations and their operation styles in order to maximise the likelihood of high-profile coverage of Consul General’s work in the region
  • Draft press releases and effective messages to press to generate positive coverage of Consulate work as requested

 

Internal communications - 15%

  • Leading on internal communications within different sections of the Consulate, contributing to communications within the diplomatic posts in China as well as partner and stakeholders of campaign activities

 

Media-related reporting - 10%

  • Provide all sections, China network and London with reporting on key developments in the media environment in south China, including developments that impact on media freedom

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary and insurance plan etc. The gross starting salary for this position before all deductions is RMB 17,670/month for Chinese Nationals and an abated monthly salary of RMB 24,529/month for British Nationals and spouses/partners of all nationalities of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria.

 

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata. Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
