The British Embassy in Bucharest is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit a Assistant to Defence Attache for Ministry of Defence Department (MOD).

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Liaise at operational level with Romanian Ministry of Defence, proactively develop contacts within the respective ministries and maintain strong relationships with key personalities;
  • Management and implementation of the Defence Bilateral Activity Programme between Romania and UK. This also includes high level representational work, event management, organizational and admin work and strategic awareness;
  • Co-ordinate and organise all official, diplomatic and ceremonial events and/or visits;
  • Provide office management and smooth running of Defence Attache’s “Head Office” in Romania (DA also responsible for Moldova – his resident country, Romania, is considered the head office);
  • Line management responsibilities of Driver of the Defence Section and Assistant to DA in Chisinau;
  • Account/budget management (monthly section account, cashbox and Government Procurement Card reconciliation and forecasting);
  • Administration of the official vehicle, equipment and inventory;
  • Responsible for obtaining all UK diplomatic clearances for aircraft (over 100 flights a month), ships, vehicles and adventurous training.

 




  • Outstanding verbal, presentation and written skills;

  • Previous experience in office administration and event planning and management;

  • Excellent English and Romanian both verbal and written;

  • Strong interpersonal skills for influencing at all levels;

  • Self-motivated, independent and effective team-player;

  • Discretion;

  • Computer skills, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;

  • Ability to travel in country and occasionally abroad, sometimes over night or more


  • Bachelor degree;

  • Some knowledge of defence issues, both globally and Romanian.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for 24 months (35 hours net per week) to cover for Maternity Leave. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked.

The annual leave entitlement is 21 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Romanian / UK public holidays per year.

Monthly salary is 5,584 RON gross. In addition, staff are entitled to a 13th month salary pro rata and may receive a performance related bonus at year end. Staff also receive meal vouchers and a monthly subscription to a medical centre. An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate, which may include training outside Romania.

For your information whilst the Emergency Ordinance 79/2017 is in place the job holder will receive a gross monthly compensation bonus of RON 1112.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance, and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of 30 working days.
