Main purpose of job:

You will be part of the Trade Policy Team within the British High Commission’s India network and the UK Government’s South Asia trade and investment network. You will play a key role in delivering our strategy aimed at achieving our ambition to double trade between the UK and India by 2030.  This will include work to resolve market access issues, boost exports and strengthen the UK-India trade partnership across a comprehensive range of areas.

Given the nature of the role, you will need to be able to deliver at pace, work collaboratively with colleagues across the UK Government’s network of posts across the South Asia region, and be comfortable moving from project to project – working autonomously and proactively.

Roles and responsibilities:

Resolution of Market Access Barriers and Company Disputes – 50%

You will work across multiple sectors in India and we will expect you to be flexible. In the first instance, key sectors may include agriculture, food and drink, and legal services.

  • Use analytical skills and engagement with industry in both the UK and India to support identification and prioritisation of market access barriers in specific sectors.
  • Support projects that help progress market access barriers in specific sectors.
  • Use stakeholder mapping and lobbying strategies to progress barriers with the Government of India and state governments.
  • Build and manage senior level relationships with key decision making and advisory bodies/authorities/institutions in India including ministries, stakeholders and partners.
  • Guide and support existing UK businesses in India, when faced with challenges and issues, affecting their profitability and/or investments in India.
  • Work with One-HMG (His Majesty’s Government) team in India, UK businesses and the Government of India to identify and apply suitable mechanisms and forums to raise, discuss and resolve company specific disputes.

Programme Management support to South Asia market access teams (20%)

  • Coordinate and collaborate with HQ and sector teams in the South Asia region (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives) for efficient management and reporting on market access barriers.
  • Develop tools and processes and coordinate regular reviews to track progress on barriers.

Programmes and regulatory cooperation (30%)

  • Design, support and run projects and programmes to facilitate trade in collaboration with other teams, including in the space of regulatory and standards diplomacy.
  • Support teams in development of projects and funding application that help progress cross-sector market access barriers.

You will bring with you, or demonstrate how you would quickly acquire an in-depth knowledge of market access issues and barriers to trade and services. You will also need excellent organisational skills to manage senior visits in your area of work, and support engagement at a senior level.

The jobholder will need to be a self-starter, able to manage their own time effectively, evaluating options, impacts, risks and solutions – knowing when and how to seek advice from others.  You will also be expected to make a positive contribution to the wider Department  for Business & Trade (DBT) and One-HMG team in India.

This role will not have any formal line management responsibility

All staff member of Department  for Business & Trade  in the South Asia network have a personal L&D budget of £500 per year in addition to the centrally run training programmes. L&D is a core part of our offer to our staff.

 

Essential on arrival:  

Qualifications: Graduate in International Relations, Business, or other related field.

Desirable:

  • Candidate should have 3-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Prior experience in engaging with senior business/ government stakeholders
  • An in-depth understanding of market access issues and a strong network in the sector are essential.
  • Experience of dealing with senior level decision makers Indian national and state government. You will need to show a solid track record of dealing with senior level decision makers in the business world.

For other than BHC candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 110484 per month together with a 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation Fund 

Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family. If you are a spouse of a staff member already employed with British High Commission, you will be covered under the family medical cover of your spouse.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.

Please note - BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
