The British Government in Germany is based at the British Embassy in Berlin and our Consulates General in Dusseldorf and Munich. We are part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time Translator and Public Diplomacy Officer based in Berlin.

Main purpose of job:

To provide the Germany network with high quality translation service, rendering English texts into German.  Support the Germany network in strengthening ties between the people of the UK and Germany and cooperation between our governments.  Supporting the Communications team in amplifying HMG values and priorities in Germany.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • To support the Embassy’s English-German translator, helping provide quick, high quality translations into German of a range of texts;
  • Help the Embassy develop initiatives to bring the people of UK and Germany together and to develop structures for cooperation between our governments.  To organise events furthering links between the people of the UK and Germany, seeking partnerships with relevant organisations in the two countries, nurturing alumni networks etc.;
  • Support the Embassy’s bilateral and cultural officer in organisation of projects that celebrate UK-German cultural relations;
  • Contribute to Embassy communications, e.g. drafting Grußworte, social media messages etc on the UK-German relationship;
  • To undertake other duties that may reasonably be required and which are in accordance with the grading and core competencies of the job.
  • Proficiency in English and German (written and spoken, minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework);
  • University qualification as a translator into German or minimum 2 years’ experience in translation into German;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Excellent organisation skills;
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Strong customer focus;
  • The ability to work effectively in a team;
  • The ability to respond flexibly to competing demands.
  • Experience of working with UK business, government or institutions;
  • Experience in working in communications;
  • An interest in the UK-Germany relationship.

Our Conditions of Employment:

This is a full-time fixed-term position for a contract period of two years with possibility of renewal. The gross yearly salary is €45,564.00 rising to approx €51,182.00 gross per annum after a qualifying period in addition to performance related pay (salary is not negotiable).

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance. The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation in Germany in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local German employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Germany and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
