This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in the future development of Chevening - the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. The Chevening Team in China runs a £1.9 million pound programme fund that supports outstanding individuals to access UK higher education at postgraduate level, immerse themselves in UK culture and connect with inspiring leaders from 145 countries around the globe.

This year, China sent the highest number of scholars of any country participating in Chevening to world-class universities and institutions across the UK, in addition to a range of senior research fellows. Since 1983, there have been over 4000 Chevening Scholars and Fellows from China across a variety of professional fields, building an engaged alumni community of passionate and exceptional achievers that have impacted their communities, their country and the world.

The Chevening Communications and Engagement Manager will be at the forefront of People to People engagement across the FCO China Network. You will coordinate a cross-Embassy, China-wide and global approach to communications and engagement with the Chevening Network, develop and maintain relationships with the Chevening alumni community in China, and implement an annual programme of sector-led alumni engagement events. This year, these events have included senior bilateral engagement with UK officials, 35th Anniversary Celebration Receptions across China and the Chevening Ball, the Chevening Awards Ceremony, academic forums and roundtables with key UK-China stakeholder institutions, and support of key Embassy campaigns and initiatives including the Embassy Open Day, the Be Yourself campaign and Ending the Illegal Wildlife Trade.

The successful candidate will need to be prepared to work some weekend days and evenings, for which time off in lieu can be arranged.

Engagement

  • Plan and implement an alumni strategy which will maximise engagement with Chevening alumni in China, empowering Chevening Champions to support the delivery of an Embassy-wide approach to alumni engagement.
  • Coordinate a China-wide bid for financial support for alumni engagement events (Chevening Alumni Project Fund), and maintain oversight of budgeting and event delivery across the China Network throughout the financial year.
  • Deliver an ambitious and creative range of events and activities throughout the calendar year, focused on catalysing new relationships and growing the Chevening community in China.

Communications

  • Manage and maintain the Chevening China alumni database.
  • Support the Head of Chevening to produce a Chevening China Impact Report
  • Develop a digital communications strategy for the Chevening network and alumni community. This will include the creation and delivery of a monthly digital China-wide Chevening Newsletter, working with the Chevening alumni community and Chevening Champions to produce inspiring and meaningful content to further promote Chevening in China.

The jobholder will also be an interview panellist for Chevening Scholarship and Fellowship interviews, and play an active role in the selection of Chevening Scholars and Fellows.
