Main purpose of job: 

The UK has a long and proud history of outward investment. Many of the world’s biggest brands and companies originated in the UK, and through their overseas investments have gone on to global success. 

From Rolls-Royce to Vodafone, Tesco to Unilever, British companies have become household names overseas. UK firms open up marketplaces and create opportunities in global supply chains for their UK suppliers. By doing so, they increase their revenues and generate wealth not only for shareholders, but also for the United Kingdom. 

DIT are looking to hire an ODI adviser to provide strategic direction and first response support to British companies looking to invest in India. The job holder will be expected to be to go-to person on ODI across sectors, providing analysis, strategic direction and first response support for companies. They will be a key player in increasing the UK’s ODI to South Asia.

Roles and Responsibilities: 

The job holder will be expected to: 

1. Provide strategic direction to the sector teams, including conducting analysis into which sectors and regions we should be prioritising. Therefore experience in sector analysis is key.  

2. Lead a training programme for sector to support BHC staff in providing ODI assistance. The job holder should understand what support we should be offering for ODI, and design and deliver a training programme to DIT staff across South Asia. They will be the go-to person for ODI support from the sector teams across the region.  

3. Work with the sector teams to create and manage a pipeline of ODI opportunities in order to understand and prioritise the potential ODI wins.  

4. Produce investor guides and first-response reports for UK businesses interested in investing in India. The role-holder must work closely with our market access team to stay abreast of the business environment in South Asia and pro-actively share information with British business. They will also act as the first touch-point for British business who are interesting in investing in South Asia, providing initial information about the market and sector specific advice to British companies.   

5. Build, use and maintain a network of stakeholders, including UK business, DIT headquarters in London and teams across South Asia.  

6. The successful candidate will be expected to work in an integrated manner with teams working in other sectors, cross-pollenate commercial opportunities and contribute to DIT business planning and targets (where applicable).

There may be requirement for travel as part of the role. Relevant job-related training will be given as required.

Essential on arrival:

Graduate with a university degree or similar professional experience and at least 2 years of experience in a relevant field.

Experience in delivering commercial advice/analysis. 

Be a self-starter, resilient and resourceful – the aim of the job is to design and deliver a meaningful and successful ODI support function which supports DIT’s regional trade plan. 

Create and maintain positive, professional and trusting working relationships with a wide range of people within and outside the British Embassy to help get business done. 

Take responsibility and be accountable for quality outcomes, including by delivering on a timely performance with energy.

Demonstrable experience in promoting international exports and investment, including proven ability to deliver results.

Computer literate, working with Microsoft Windows and able to manage information effectively with available computer systems.

Desirable:

  • Demonstrable experience in trade or investment Promotion.
  • Experience of working with UK Government and businesses
  • Knowledge of UK commercial expertise in ODI.
  • Experience of sectoral analysis

  • Effective communication skills
  • Enjoys drafting for a variety of audience
