The British Embassy in Spain is part of a global network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting for a Consular Officer position in Las Palmas.

The main purpose of the job is to provide high quality, professional and efficient consular services to visiting and resident British Nationals in Canaries in normal times and in a crisis. To be a fully engaged and proactive member of both the consular and wider Embassy teams.

Roles and responsibilities:

Assistance (70%)

To provide consular assistance to British nationals (including visiting) in cases of hospitalisations, mental health, deaths, victims of crime, financial assistance, welfare, and to handle detainee and prisoner casework, including reporting new detentions and visiting detainees and prisoners. To handle standard counter enquiries from the general public and local authorities. To support the ETD centre in Madrid in producing Emergency Travel Documents for collection at post, and manage working stock. To support Madrid in Notarial Service process by preparing documents for signature and return in good time ready to upload on Casebook. To deal with the return of lost property (passports & driving licences), including returned passports onto Casebook.

Stakeholder management (5%)

To build and maintain relationships at appropriate levels with local authorities, such as Police, Prison, Court, Social Services, Hospitals, etc. To liaise and collaborate with such local authorities, as and when necessary in order to assist British nationals.

Network Efficiency & Change Projects (5%)

 To help implement change projects at Post and take part in Network projects as and when necessary.

Office & Corporate Management (5%)

Share general office and corporate management duties, such as stationary/equipment orders, maintaining office equipment, replenishing notice boards, liaising with local service providers and financial accounts.

Prevention Activities (10%)

To effectively carry out tasks assigned and actively participate and be involved in the Post Prevention Plan.

Crisis (5%)

To help prepare for crisis handling and implement Crisis Management Plan, as and when activated.

  • Proven customer service experience of at least three years and a strong sense of customer service delivery, including an ability to support customers in difficult or traumatic situations;
  • Knowledge of the local system;
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills;
  • Fluency in oral and written English and Spanish;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout Spain and the UK;
  • Attention to detail, strong analytical perspective and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work at pace and prioritise, managing an often heavy workload;
  • IT skills (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel);

Available to work out of hours and to travel abroad when required.

  • Experience of influencing and engaging key stakeholders and local authorities;
  • An understanding of the issues that British nationals (tourists and residents) may face;
  • Previous consular work experience;
  • Driving licence;

This is a full-time permanent contract. The working hours are 37.5 hours per week.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary pending EU Exit. If requirements change additional eligibility information will be shared during the recruitment process.
