Main purpose of job:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government’s international business development agency. DIT USA, working closely with DIT and other agencies in the United Kingdom, is charged with transatlantic trade development between the UK and the US; and with assisting US companies looking to invest in the UK. Reporting to the Trade & Investment Officer for Fast Growth Software Startups. This involves researching and tracking fast growing start-ups and buiding a sales pipeline, generating leads from the research, and setting up meetings for the officer.  In addition you will attend conferences, organise events and support VIP visit programs.  It’s a fast moving role that requires a flexible individual with a good sense of humour and ability to move at pace.

This position also provides support to the Regional Director on budgets, VIP visits, marketing support, arranging travel schedules/calendar management. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic team comprised of 14 trade and investment professionals focused on knowledge-based sectors including: financial services, life sciences,venture capital, creative & digital media and technology.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Support the Technology TIO and US Tech team to forge strong relationships with business leaders, trade associations, and interlocutors both in the UK and the US.  Generate leads and projects from US prospects looking to set up in the UK.
  • Deliver impactful, targeted marketing programs and events in conjunction with partners and stakeholders to build DIT awareness, promote key messages, and showcase UK competitiveness. Track and report outcomes.
  • Support the Regional Director with local budget and team administration, cross San Francisco-Post programs including trade missions and VIP visits, and undertaking special Projects/research/outreach programs.
  • Work across the British Consulate San Francisco and US Network to deliver on the UK’s wider Prosperity Agenda.

Essential on arrival:

  • Bachelor’s degree or experience in a relevant field – Technology, International Trade or marketing/communications is preferred;
  • Ability to generate leads, which includes cold calling/emailing and tracking a sales pipeline
  • Relevant work experience and/or business development experience in the US and, ideally, the UK;
  • Strong client management experience
  • Strong administrator with keen communication skills
  • Pro-activity, organised and works to deadlines, priorities and is able to multi-task;
  • A self-starter, able to work independently and show initiative with limited day-to-day supervision while operating as part of a wider team with shared goals and wide-ranging objectives;
  • Strong networking skills
  • Able to demonstrate strong administration and research skills;
  • Driving license and ability to undertake occasional air travel including overnight stays.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Computer literacy in standard Microsoft applications
  • Business development experience in the UK

Successful Candidate must be:

  • Able to be located in/relocate to, the San Francisco City area.
  • Willing to undertake occasional travel to other parts of North America and to the UK as required.
  • Willing to represent DIT and the British Consulate at external functions (both during working hours and evenings).

This is a 6-month temporary role with the possibility of extension.

Possibilities include earlier or later start times in the morning – followed by leaving earlier or later in the evening.  DIT SF allows employees to work remotely, one-to-two days a week, depending on schedule. (Note: this is not always possible during busy periods, or when there are mandatory staff meetings.  Each week is taken on a case-by-case basis, with clear communication around what’s required to be in the office for, vs. the authorization to work remotely).
