Main purpose of job:

The Political and Human Rights Officer will serve as a key member of the British Embassy’s Policy, Projects and Communications team. The jobholder will be responsible for monitoring, assessing and reporting on human rights and rule of law issues throughout the Philippines, including the Embassy’s current priority areas of media freedom, modern slavery, gender equality, LGBT and disability rights. The jobholder will also support the Embassy’s Senior Political Advisor and Second Secretary Political in providing analysis of internal politics and delivery of the UK’s wider objectives on peace and security.

Roles and responsibilities:

The jobholder will have a front-line role in delivering the Embassy’s objectives for human rights and rule of law. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with an extensive professional expertise of human rights, and a deep interest in internal politics and broader current affairs.

The jobholder will be responsible for:

  • Regular, insightful and evidence-based analysis of issues relating to human rights and rule of law, helping to shape implementation of UK policy in the Philippines;
  • Design, implementation and oversight of projects to support delivery of the UK’s human rights objectives, current project areas include media freedom, modern slavery, gender equality, LGBT and disability rights;
  • Building and maintaining a broad network of relevant contacts on human rights and internal politics, using these relationships to support the above responsibilities, while representing the interests and conveying the views of the UK.

The jobholder will have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, in both English and Filipino. The officer will be motivated, creative and analytical, comfortable working within teams and as a self-starter. The jobholder will also have an eye both for detail, and for the bigger picture, and will feel comfortable delivering effectively and efficiently at pace across a number of political issues and human rights priorities, and within a broad range of environments. The jobholder should be willing and able to conduct frequent travel throughout the Philippines, including in Mindanao.

The British Embassy has an active L&D Committee and offers a wide range of in-house training and funding for external training on communications & media, policy and programme work.

Work beyond regular working hours maybe required for specific events/occasions.
