Main purpose of job:

Working principally from the High Commission in Ottawa and with the expectation of some travel within Canada, the successful candidate will lead on the design and delivery of an innovative programme of visits and events in 2022, as a major part of the UK government’s public bilateral engagement with Canada.

The successful, highly motivated and creative candidate will join a British High Commission, and wider UK in Canada network (encompassing offices in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver) which is focused on showcasing the best of UK-Canada collaboration from science to sport in the context of a thriving, forward-looking relationship with strong historical and people-to-people links.

The jobholder will work within a flexible environment to:

  • Support delivery of senior official and ministerial visits from the UK, liaising with teams across the High Commission, with UK government departments, and with Canadian federal and local government officials, parliamentarians and other partners to deliver first class programmes.
  • Design, drive and deliver programme of innovative events to strengthen and highlight the UK-Canada relationship from science and technology, defence and security, to foreign policy, human rights and development.
  • Liaise with policy leads, corporate services teams and senior stakeholders across the breadth of the British High Commission in Ottawa and the broader UK in Canada network to ensure events deliver against and achieve maximum impact for the British High Commission business plan.
  • Work closely with the UK in Canada communications team to support them in ensuring UK events achieve maximum positive exposure.
  • Prepare, on occasion, speeches - including for the British High Commissioner/Deputy High Commissioner - for set-piece events.  

Essential on arrival:

  • Must be legally allowed to work in Canada in February 2022
  • Strong events management, planning and delivery experience
  • Experience of working with Canadian government and industry, academic and other public institutions, project management. 
  • Be a proactive self-starter, able to work independently whilst remaining a positive team player.
  • Ability to deal with a range of competing priorities in a calm, efficient and professional manner Proficient in MS Office Applications
  • Strong, professional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact at all levels of representation with government and a diverse range of organisations.

 


Desirable:

  • Experience of working with digital and traditional media.
  • Experience working in an international environment

The UK Government actively promotes Learning and Development (L&D) across all departments. There will be ample opportunities for the job-holder to develop, both within the areas directly relevant to your role, and more widely in a number of areas that may be of interest to you. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has a dedicated L&D team, as well as a Diplomatic Academy which leads on developing and organising dedicated training in policy areas. The FCDO ring-fences an annual allocation of five days that officers can devote to L&D activities, and the High Commission provides an annual L&D budget to which all staff can apply.
