The British Embassy Riyadh has a vacancy for a Health Policy Adviser for a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2023. It may be possible to extend the contract depending on performance and operational requirements.

This is an exciting time of change and reform in Saudi Arabia, with Vision 2030 economic reforms providing unprecedented opportunities for the UK healthcare sector. The Health Policy Advisor will shape the UK approach to healthcare in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is a high priority bilateral relationship for the UK. We have a strong relationship on the trade side, led by the Department for International Trade (DIT). The Health Policy Advisor will engage the Saudi Health Ministry on policy issues, eg primary healthcare, public health campaigns.

The jobholder will also develop practical collaboration on healthcare between UK and Saudi Arabia. This will involve developing expertise on the British and Saudi health sectors and conceptualising and enabling practical cooperation. The jobholder will lead also on COVID-19, working with the UK and Saudi governments as the pandemic evolves.

The British Embassy in Riyadh is a large and diverse team, delivering key priorities against a wide range of UK Government objectives. The environment is challenging and the issues can be complex and fast moving.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

- Policy

  • Develop a contact network in UK and Saudi governments, including their health ministries, and the private sector.
  • Build a nuanced understanding of the challenges facing the health systems in the two countries and provide regular reporting and analysis.
  • Support and advise British Ministers and senior officials engaging with Saudi counterparts.
  • Make recommendations for practical collaboration, e.g. healthy weight management, mental health, primary healthcare management.
  • Collaborate closely with Department for International Trade (DIT) colleagues to advance UK commercial healthcare objectives.
  • Monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and the UK and Saudi responses to it. Promote bilateral collaboration on the ongoing and future pandemics.

- Programme

  • Develop and secure British government funding for health sector projects to enable practical bilateral collaboration.
  • Direct and manage project implementation.

- Corporate: All staff are encouraged to contribute to the British embassy beyond their core jobs, e.g., organising away days and social events, driving initiatives to reduce the Embassy’s environmental impact.

The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis affecting UK citizens.

  • Strong IT skills and literacy in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams).
  • Health sector background, ideally in the UK or in KSA.
  • Previous work in international companies, organisations or embassies.
  • Arabic language skills.

Eligibility:

The position is available to Saudi Nationals and to current holders of valid Saudi residence permits or transferable iqamas. The successful candidate will be required to transfer their sponsorship to the British Embassy. 

Working hours and remuneration:

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role.

Salary details:

  • Base Salary including Eid bonus - SAR 13,890.44
  • Housing Allowance - SAR 3,472.61 (subject to eligibility)*
  • Travel Allowance - SAR 400 (subject to eligibility)*

*Allowances are not payable to staff who receive official provision for such expenditure in some other form.

No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

 

This position is full-time, based on 35 hours per week. Normal working hours for the Embassy are from 08:00 to 15:00 from Sunday to Thursday, with core working hours from 10:00-15:00. Core working hours is the period of the day that employees are required to be at work. The working day outside of the core hours is a flexible period, which allows employees to choose when they work, subject to operational needs.

The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours, especially during visits and events.

 

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.
