View Vacancy - Internal Communications and Engagement Officer
The British Embassy in Washington is looking to hire an Internal Communications and Engagement Officer. This is a great opportunity to work at the heart of one of the biggest and busiest missions in the UK diplomatic network. This varied role will require the jobholder to take responsibility for all aspects of Internal Communications across the British Government’s network of diplomatic posts and staff in the US. The successful candidate will work closely with senior leaders to ensure the Embassy’s vision, objectives and direction of travel are communicated effectively.
The successful candidate will have strong written and oral communications skills. They will be energetic and enthusiastic, and will be able to confidently work autonomously as well as collaboratively with several busy teams. They will be approachable and responsive, be able to deal directly with seniors in the Embassy and be resilient. They will need to quickly familiarise themselves with the Embassy’s working practices and policies. The Embassy is in the final phases of an extensive refurbishment, which will give us bright, modern workspaces. The successful candidate will help us find innovative and creative ways to engage staff and ensure we are using the our new buildings to their maximum.
Responsibilities:
- In consultation with senior stakeholders, write an insight-driven and measurable annual internal communications strategy. Review and adapt the plan as necessary.
- Manage an internal communications grid, ensuring content is published in line with UK Government priorities
- Manage a variety of internal communications channels, for Washington and the wider US Network, including email, Teams, Yammer, the Intranet and other digital channels, and provide support and advice to colleagues on content generation. Ensure content published is in line with the communications strategy and UK government priorities.
- Develop innovative ideas to modernise communications and reporting, including video and interactive content
- Lead on the Ambassador’s quarterly all staff meetings, including curating content, creating a presentation, managing the meeting, liaising and engaging with external presenters.
- Lead on the US Network’s staff awards program, including managing nominations, the selection process and ceremony for winners.
- Work with Senior Leaders, Departments, Committees, Networks and affinity groups within the Embassy to increase visibility through an internal communications plan and promote their messages to staff.
- Lead the communications for internal engagement events and corporate campaigns, such as wellbeing fairs, Beyond Plastic, as well as keeping staff informed about the Refurbishment Project
- Lead on the Staff Survey, including providing headcounts and championing staff participation. Help senior leaders break down the results and work with the survey lead to run an ongoing working group to deliver change.
- Observe board meetings, and help write-up descriptive and engaging communications on elements that affect all staff
- Monitor the shared inbox for general questions and requests from staff.
- Other ad hoc duties as required.
- Significant experience of an internal-facing communications/engagement role
- Exceptional writing and presentation skills
- Excellent graphic design skills, including videography
- Comfortable with advising, supporting and drafting for senior leaders
- Self-starter, comfortable with strategy and delivery with minimal support
- Experience in government, NGO or not-for-profit
- Experience with OASIS (or similar communications campaign framework)
- Experience gathering internal communications insight
