Main purpose of job:

Be part of the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) mission to drive more trade and investment between North America and the UK. With a mature, high spending consumer market and an open, liberal economy, world-class talent and a business-friendly regulatory environment, the UK is the leading destination for foreign investment in Europe, and the second highest investment destination in the world.  The UK is also the world’s sixth largest exporter and the second largest services exporter.

We are looking for a Data Visualisations Associate to develop and deliver data visualisations using AWS QuickSight for the DIT North America network. We have already begun building dashboards using QuickSight, which this enthusiastic and analytical Associate will take ownership for in maintaining and extending so that our entire North American Network benefits from quality insight that better informs our decisions and provides efficiency gains through centralised and automated reporting.

This role reports to the Operations Manager and works closely with the Data Management Associate, Director of Strategy, and Chief Operating Officer for North America. Together they will instil a data-discipline that drives results-driven-behaviours across the network and provides transparency across all of our Operations including Trade, Investment, Account Management, and People. This position requires a detail oriented, enthusiastic person, who is self-driven, comfortable dealing with ambiguity and working with large datasets, proficient in AWS QuickSight dashboard builds and is capable of communicating with and influencing individuals at all levels of the organization. The ideal candidate will have a natural curiosity about solving problems, identifying the right metrics to inspect the business, and to help leaders make great data driven divisions. The Associate will work with a highly collaborative team, and have influence over the analytical roadmaps, establishment of performance metrics, dashboards and report development. The successful candidate will be able to bring their unique talents, skills and expertise to shape our program. Above all they will be someone who loves to tell stories with Data!

In one year you'll know you were successful if...

  • You are an expert in accessing, visualising, and analysing North America’s datasets including Trade data, Investment, data, and People data;
  • You've treated our internal data as a product and helped to scale our dashboard, trained teammates to leverage QuickSight, and provided your colleagues with easier access to insights;
  • You've built tools and mechanisms to consolidate and update data regularly to make data easily accessible to all stakeholders in the North American network;
  • You've translated business questions into quantitative questions, uncovered the inputs into our success metrics and started publishing reports through our dashboard that leadership teams use to identify success and areas of improvement;
  • You've worked seamlessly with the Data Management Associate on the upkeep of North America’s KPI metrics and planned data analysis roadmaps to meet the operational and performance tracking requirements across teams.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Own, maintain, and enhance, North America’s AWS QuickSight dashboard.
  • Partnering with North America network Operations and UK Data Analysts to consult, develop and implement metrics, automated reporting/process solutions, and process improvements to meet business needs.
  • Partnering with the Data Management Associate to support data needs related to business cadence such as weekly, monthly and quarterly business reviews.
  • Enabling effective decision making by retrieving and aggregating data from multiple sources and compiling it into a digestible and actionable format using AWS QuickSight.
  • Conducting ad hoc analysis projects – at times across multiple systems answering complex business questions and providing actionable insights to the leadership team to inform decisions and strategy.
  • Conducting trend analysis to identify opportunities, highlight strengths, and provide recommended corrective actions
  • Supporting the Head of Strategy and the Chief Operating Officer to identify and clarify ongoing needs and influencing the ongoing analytics roadmap.
  • 1-3 years relevant work experience, which includes data management analysis support and handling large datasets;
  • Proficient in using AWS QuickSight including creating / linking to datasets, understanding SPICE, and building/maintaining dashboards;
  • Comfortable with SQL;
  • Strong excel skills;
  • Robust analytical and numerical skills;
  • Self-starter able to work on own initiative, while operating as part of a wider North America team;
  • Proven problem solving skills, project management skills, attention to detail, ability to influence others, and good organisational skills;
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) with strong interpersonal skills, and an ability to effectively communicate with both business and technical teams – you’re passionate about storytelling via data!
  • Must have the legal status to live and work in Canada.
