The British Embassy Riyadh has a vacancy for a Trade Advisor for the Energy & Resources sector under the Department for International Trade. This is for a fixed-term contract of two (2) years, with a possibility of extension.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the British Government’s trade and investment development organisation. Its aim is to enhance the competitiveness of companies in the UK through overseas trade and investments and attract a continuing high-level of quality foreign direct investment into the UK. We work with UK-based businesses to ensure their success in international markets and encourage overseas companies to bring their high-quality investment to the UK. DIT has a network of three trade teams in Saudi Arabia (in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al Khobar) that work closely together to deliver services to our customers.

The main purpose of the job is to support the Energy & Resources sector with commercial dealings: assisting UK companies in grasping business opportunities locally: sharing of Export Opportunities and guidance on how UK companies can develop their business through trade with Saudi Arabia.

This role is based in Riyadh and will be reporting initially to the Head of the British Trade Office based in Al Khobar, but will then be managed by the sector lead who will also be based in Riyadh. Regular travel between Riyadh and Khobar will be required. 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

The successful candidate will

  • Help support the (UK) clean energy commercial sector (energy transition, renewables, petrochemicals and mining) across the whole KSA network. They will have a high degree of responsibility in generating and maintaining local and UK business contacts, identifying new business opportunities, and providing other campaign activity including events at the British Embassy/ British Trade Office.
  • Be required to understand the KSA market trends and ambitions to identify valuable Export Opportunities and secure high value Export Wins in pursuit of regional (Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan - MEAP) targets for DIT.
  • Manage relationships with UK companies, cluster leads, sector groups in the UK and KSA stakeholders.
  • Support the cluster lead in developing and engaging a wide range of stakeholders in Saudi government organisations to understand and promote commercial opportunities in the Energy & Resources sector.
  • Provide DIT and Sector specialists with in-country support, including, but not limited to official programmes, trade missions, events, and trade shows.
  • Provide market analysis and guidance on doing business in Saudi Arabia. Briefing both individual visitors and groups of UK companies on the characteristics of the Saudi market, and support UK companies in pursuing export opportunities.

The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific sector responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of the line manager of the DIT Country Director. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis affecting UK citizens.

  • Previous commercial experience and working in a target driven environment.
  • Previous experience in the energy sector.
  • Arabic language skills, both written and spoken.
  • Public speaking and presentation skills.

Eligibility:

The position is available to Saudi Nationals and to current holders of valid Saudi residence permits or transferable iqamas. The successful candidate will be required to transfer their sponsorship to the British Embassy. 

 

Working hours and remuneration:

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role.

Salary details:

  • Base Salary including Eid bonus - SAR 5,775.06
  • Housing Allowance - SAR 1,443.77 (subject to eligibility)*
  • Travel Allowance - SAR 400 (subject to eligibility)*
  • Total - SAR 7,618.83

*Allowances are not payable to staff who receive official provision for such expenditure in some other form.

No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

This position is full-time, based on 35 hours per week. Normal working hours for the Embassy are from 08:00 to 15:00 from Sunday to Thursday, with core working hours from 10:00-15:00. Core working hours is the period of the day that employees are required to be at work. The working day outside of the core hours is a flexible period, which allows employees to choose when they work, subject to operational needs.

The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours, especially during visits and events. Flexible working arrangements will be considered based on operational requirements and upon agreement with the Line Manager and in line with the Embassy’s policies.

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.
