MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The successful candidate will work closely with the British Ambassador and Political Counsellor as a key member of the Embassy’s Internal Political Team. S/he will be a senior member of the Internal Team, helping to drive the highest standards of political analysis, programme oversight and networking and engaging for the Embassy. They will be need to demonstrate high levels of personal leadership and strong teamwork. The position will suit a self-starter with strong analytical skills, experience of programme management and managing and delivering through others. 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Political Analysis

  • Oversee the Embassy’s political reporting, delivering timely, well-written and succinct analysis of key developments at a national and local level through the team, drawing out the implications for different areas of the Embassy’s work in the Philippines.
  • Ensure that team briefing for the British Ambassador and other senior members of Embassy staff helps them to navigate meetings and events effectively and to deliver key objectives on behalf of the UK.

Networking and Influencing

  • Working closely with the Ambassador, her Private Office, the Political Counsellor and the wider team develop and oversee a cross-Embassy political networking strategy to develop productive relationships with key interlocutors in the executive and legislative arms of government, and other relevant organisations at national and provincial level.
  • Oversee the Political Advisor’s work with colleagues in London and contacts in the Philippines Congress to re-establish UK-Philippines inter-parliamentary links.

Programme Oversight

  • Provide oversight of the Internal Team’s activities under the Conflict Security and Stability Fund to support objectives on media freedom, human rights and political reform.

Team Management

  • Line Manage the Embassy’s Political Advisor and lead the wider Political Team which includes a Political Officer and Political Support Officer, delivering on political objectives in the country business plan through them and supporting their development and growth in the Embassy.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Language: English & Filipino
  • Level of language required : Fluent in verbal & written English & Filipino

ESSENTIAL SKILLS / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS /:

  • A university degree in Political Science, International Relations or any other relevant course
  • A detailed understanding of historical and contemporary political issues in the Philippines
  • A strong network of political contacts
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Experience of line managing colleagues and delivering outcomes through a team
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills
  • Significant drive, enthusiasm and commitment
  • Effective written and oral communications in English and Filipino
  • Ability to distil complex or technical issues into clear messages

  • Post-graduate degree in a relevant field
  • Experience of programme management

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
