Main Purpose of Job:

Be part of the Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) mission to drive more trade and investment between North America and the UK. Based at the British Consulate General in Montreal, the Senior Trade & Investment Officer will be part of a wider North America team responsible for space, aerospace and future mobility. This role will include proactively identifying trade and investment opportunities in Quebec for market ready companies seeking to launch into, or expand in the UK market. In addition, the role will also support UK companies seeking trade opportunities in Canada. There will be line management responsibility of one Investment Officer. You will also be a valued contributor to the Montreal based regional team and work closely with colleagues based around the US and UK. The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis starting as soon as possible, subject to successful security clearance. The language requirement is bilingual English and French.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive key account management to key Canadian prospects looking to set up operations in the UK; and support Canadian companies already active in the UK market to grow their business.
  • Support UK businesses seeking export opportunities within Canada.
  • Successfully build and manage a pipeline of knowledge-driven projects that have the potential to bring high-value jobs and R&D to the UK.
  • Assist high-growth and innovative Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and established businesses understand and access the UK market. In addition, this role will work with the economic and trade policy team in Ottawa to address concerns around trade policy or market access barriers.
  • Build positive relationships with Canadian and UK business leaders, trade associations, regional aerospace, automotive, and supply chain/logistics (Industry 4.0) providers.
  • Develop and implement high impact, targeted marketing programs and events in conjunction with stakeholder partners to build our brand awareness, promote key messaging, and showcase UK competitiveness.  
  • Keep pace with market trends, incentives and centres of excellence in North America and the UK to identify commercial opportunities and provide informed advice to clients and stakeholders.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to deliver high-impact programming, including developing and hosting industry round tables, seminars and trade missions, and contributing to VIP visit programs.
  • Support cross-team projects to advance UK economic and trade policy goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Resources Managed:

  • Line management of one Investment Officer.
  • Demonstrated experience in a professional and client focused environment with relevant public and/or private sector, economic or business development capacity.
  • Knowledge of aerospace, space and future mobility sectors including major companies and trends in Canada and the UK.
  • Excellent stakeholder management abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and networking skills.
  • Excellent management and collaboration skills with the ability to deliver results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask and complete work while traveling.
  • Proficiency in Office 365 and Microsoft Teams is essential.
  • Must be able to attend events outside of office hours and undertake travel in Canada and internationally up to 20% of your time.
  • Knowledge of the UK investment and business environment.
  • Knowledge of the UK- Canada bilateral business relationship.
  • B2B sales and and/or marketing experience.
  • Experience in a supervisory role.
  • Driver’s licence.

Working Patterns:

This role is 37.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday. The consulate does not have a long working hours culture. The UK in Canada Network offers a strong benefits package. This package includes generous vacation and leave time, flexible working patterns, and enriching learning and development opportunities.

The British High Commission and its Canada Network of Consulates embraces hybrid working.  Flexible working options available upon approval of line manager. The British Consulate’s current policy asks staff to work in the office 40-60% of time, with the remainder available to work from home. We are an organization that also recognises the critical value of teamwork, and we embrace and endorse collaboration by ensuring that all staff attend the office flexibly yet regularly.

  • Be willing to represent DBT and the British Consulate at external functions (during working hours and very occasionally evenings).
  • Be willing to undertake occasional travel in North America and to the UK.
