Main purpose of job:

You will oversee and take ownership for delivering Trade & Investment external and internal communications. Your primary audience is the business audience of the UK in India network. As this role is funded by the UK’s Department for Business & Trade (DBT), it incorporates supporting the wider South Asia region, for which you will provide secondary support. This is a high profile, stretching role that requires significant energy, commitment, drive and ambition to successfully deliver.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?: 

  • Managing proactive external communications that focus on the Trade and Investment work that the UK in India network is doing, with a secondary focus on the wider South Asia region. You will oversee media relations that focuses on business and trade titles, arranging senior interactions with editors and owners, arranging interviews with spokespeople, and responding to journalist queries.
  • Using communications to increase positive perceptions of the UK as a partner of choice when it comes to business and trade, using the full range of communications  tools and levers that the UK in India has. You will bring creativity and a proven track record to your work here.
  • Your work supports delivery of DBT’s Regional Trade Plan (RTP) which is comprised of Export Wins (helping UK companies export to India and the region) and Investment Projects (securing high quality investment, from India and the wider South Asia region, back into the UK).
  • Developing and delivering an external communications plan for the region, pulling in inputs from colleagues in a collaborative manner. The audience here is Trade & Investment. You will also oversee communications plans that support the drumbeat of key Trade & Investment activity taking place in the region (sectoral events, inward visits, major moments, etc).
  • Building your relationships and network with key stakeholders in the Department for Business & Trade’s UK HQ and the wider region in the area of Trade & Investment.
  • Leading on the external communications strategy and plan for our 3x key spokespeople – His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC, based in Mumbai) and the Deputy HMTCs (based in Bengaluru and New Delhi).
  • Growing our business audience across our key channels with a primary emphasis on LinkedIn and secondary emphasis on Twitter and other channels, overseeing development of communications plans.
  • Co-commissioning and using insight to develop evidence-based external communications strategies that will work with our core business audience.
  • Managing a team, including resource planning responsibilities and performance management, in addition to mentoring and developing talent within the team.
  • Partnering closely with your opposite number (also an SEO position) to drive a one-team, collaborative model that works together to deliver organisational objectives.
  • Working closely with the wider India network, especially the Head of News and Digital in New Delhi.
  • Assuring the quality of all communications outputs (including but not limited to proofreading print, digital and other online and offline media in English)
  • Overseeing budget spend, working with the Head of Team and your Marketing & Campaigns counterpart, taking responsibility for DBT South Asia’s communications and marketing budgets.
  • Overseeing internal communications products that the Trade & Investment team put out.
  • Reporting to the Head of Communications, Marketing, Visits & Events for South Asia (Trade & Investment) with a dotted line to the Head of Communications for the UK in India network (based at British High Commission New Delhi).
  • In addition to your Trade & Investment focus, you will lead a team of 3x communications professionals who oversee the Deputy High Commission of Mumbai’s external and internal communications , including its public diplomacy and digital communications activities.

Essential on arrival:

  • Experience of leading and performance managing a communications team
  • Experience of working in a marketing and communications field
  • Willingness to travel both within India and internationally
  • Strong interpersonal skills including working with senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills (you may be tested)

Desirable:     

  • Experience of working cross-culturally, in an international organisation and context
  • Experience of engaging business audiences.
  • A good understanding of trade and investment and policy implications.
  • Strong understanding of digital channels and key trends relevant to your work.

For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 173,515 month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation Fund.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.

Please note - BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
