Honorary Consuls are volunteers who help the British Government to provide an accessible and responsive service to our customers : British and other nationals for whom we have consular responsibility abroad. Under the guidance of the Consular team, they provide information and assistance pto our customers.

In Jamaica, the British High Commission, Kingston has had an Honorary Consul in Montego Bay that covers the areas of Hanover, Westmoreland, St James and Trelawney. A vacancy has arisen due to the former Honorary Consul’s departure from Jamaica. .

As part of British High Commission Kingston team and the wider Americas Consular Network, you will help deliver modern and efficient consular services to our customers in Montego Bay and the surrounding area.

You are expected to have and further develop good local contacts in this region and act as a liaison point between the local community and the High Commission. Your advice to the British High Commission of issues or concerns affecting the British nationals in Montego Bay and regions of Hanover, Westmoreland, St James and Trelawney will be valuable.

Assistance – Provide consular supportto our customers within current guidelines and under the direction of the consular team at the British High Commission Kingston. This could include visiting persons in hospital, or in detention, and providing support to family members following bereavement (if they are in or travel to Jamaica), as well as liaising with local funeral directors.

At times, you may need to assist the consular team on a child safeguarding or child abduction/custody matters, and providing support following a rape or sexual assault. All assistance must be agreed with and led by the Consular team in Kingston with regular updates given to to the Vice Consul and Consular Officer.

In exceptional circumstances, you may need to help facilitate Emergency Travel Documents for eligible customers only when this has been agreed in advance with the Consular team.

On occasion you may need to support the team in responding to emergency cases out of hours when our Global Response Centre in London requests local support from the Consular team in Kingston .

Crisis Response – Respond immediately, as directed by the British High Commission Kingston, to a crisis (e.g. road/Ship/airline accident, serious fire, natural disaster). This may include liaising with the local authorities in the event of such an emergency, establishing the scale of the situation and providing prompt updates to the British High Commission. If appropriate, and only if directed to do so, to supporting consular colleagues who are assisting affected customers.  

Outreach/Consular Prevention –Assist the Consular team with the delivery of activities that prevent and reduce the risks of consular cases occurring. To advise and inform on our wider consular priorities and issues which are affecting, or could affect, British nationals in Jamaica. Outreach/Prevention with the assistance of the consular team in Kingston will focus on assistance, safety, emergency response, crisis (civil protection) and those that engage with British nationals (general local procedures, social groups, tour operators etc). You will be expected to help maintain and update contacts‘ lists and identify new appropriate contacts and stakeholders.



  • You must be a professional person of good standing in the local community.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. (English).
  • Must have good organisational skills and the ability to work efficiently and accurately under pressure. Must have a genuine interest and ability to assist people.
  • Must have experience in dealing with people in a friendly and sensitive manner.
  • Will be expected to manage personal information in accordance with data protection principles. Evidence of experience with data protection/managment will be useful.
  • The successful candidate must have a high degree of personal resilience and empathy.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite: Excel and Word as a minimum  
  • A good knowledge of multi-cultural Britain, its language, and geography.



  • Preferably a British national resident in Jamaica or having strong links to the UK.
  • Have good local knowledge and either have or show the ability to build excellent relationship with the local authorities, emergency services and other partners.

This is a voluntary role.

You are expected to offer your support for less than four hours in a week. The successful candidate will receive an annual honorarium for undertaking the role (£2,000 equivalent in US Dollars). You will also receive approved expenses when undertaking agreed work on behalf of the British High Commission.
