The UK Mission in Geneva is seeking a new Senior Trade Policy Attaché to support our engagement in the World Trade Organization. The new Senior Trade Policy Attaché will contribute to continuing the UK’s track record of engagement with the regular business of the WTO, including monitoring, enforcing and renegotiating the WTO Agreements, including through representing the UK at Committee meetings in the WTO, keeping colleagues abreast of developments and participating in policy discussions.

The jobholder will work closely with colleagues in UKMis and the new Department for International Trade (DIT) in London to help deliver the UK’s WTO priorities, build a network of relevant contacts and gather timely, relevant information. The jobholder(s) will cooperate closely with other Missions, the secretariats of the WTO and other organisations, business and civil society.

The jobholder will also have the opportunity to support UK objectives in the other multilateral agencies in Geneva covering economic issues and to play a role in the wider corporate objectives of the Mission.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver visit programmes for visiting UK senior officials in the relevant area;
  • Monitor, report on and offer policy advice on work in the WTO in the relevant area;

  • Provide technical policy advice on the UK’s transition in the relevant areas, engaging with the WTO Secretariat and Geneva delegations as appropriate;    

  • Support colleagues in the Economic Team by covering other WTO/economic meetings and events when necessary;

  • Make a contribution to the corporate life of the Mission.

     

     

 

  • Fluency in English;
  • Experience working in/with the WTO regular and negotiating committees and working groups;

  • Experience in Trade negotiations, including towards multilateral, plurilateral and bilateral agreements;

  • Experience in working on trade in goods, including in a negotiating context;

  • Practical experience in scheduling trade commitments and trade statistics.

  • Understanding of Member State Permanent Missions and how they interact with the WTO;
  • Familiarity of working in public service;
  • Previous experience of working in or with a Permanent Mission to the WTO.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract  of 24 months, for 5 working days, at C4 level.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and 3 months probation period.
