UKMIS (UK Mission to the United Nations)

Main purpose of job: To provide administrative support to the General Assembly and Human Rights section at the UK Mission to the United Nations, and act as Executive Assistant to the Ambassador of the General Assembly. The jobholder will work in an exciting team, which is at the heart of the UK Mission’s effort to be a force for good at the United Nations, promoting human rights and exerting influence in the General Assembly.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Providing administrative support including: information management, photocopying, faxing, shredding, compiling briefing, part managing UK Mission shared inbox and incoming correspondence, arranging official travel (flights, visas etc), arranging day to day meetings and Mission events (including issuing invitations, issuing official communications between Missions, co-ordinating replies, booking refreshments etc).
  • Maintaining the schedule and inbox of senior UKMIS staff, answering telephone calls and providing basic secretarial support.
  • Assisting with incoming visits, including by UK Ministers, senior officials and UK election candidates, including by setting up programmes, organising logistics and arranging catering.
  • Office management for UKMIS sections: budget planning and monitoring, managing stationery and other office supplies.
  • Providing support for UN General Assembly and wider GAHR team business, particularly during busy times of year.
  • Providing administrative and organisational support in the run-up to and during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week in September.
  • Covering for the other members of the UKMIS Administrative Team as necessary; including some flexible hours.
  • Additional duties, tasks, and/or projects as assigned.

The ideal candidate must have a can-do attitude. They will be an enthusiastic and flexible team player, able to deliver results quickly and accurately with great attention to detail, and be able to shift priorities swiftly to a variety of different tasks.

Strong written communication skills would be advantageous. For the right candidate, there will opportunities to develop policy skills and an understanding of diplomacy and multilateral work.

Other skills / experience / qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of two years’ work experience in a relevant field;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Track record of organisational skills, including managing multiple tasks and strong attention to detail;
  • Keen and flexible team player, ready to help out all colleagues and sections when they need it;
  • Strong computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Under US State Department requirements, the UK Government in the US may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Permanent Residents or A visa holders with EAD cards*.
