British Embassy in Beijing is recruiting a Senior Economic Officer to lead the Embassy’s engagement with China on global economic policy and delivery of the annual UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue. 

Work on economic policy in China is fast-moving and high profile: the economy continues to grow rapidly; China’s impact on the global economy and institutions is more significant than ever; and Brexit makes the bilateral economic relationship more interesting and important. 

This role is right at the centre of the Embassy’s economic team, leading on key elements of the UK’s approach to China. Key responsibilities include:   

1. Policy Engagement:

  • On China’s multilateral economic policy, including the G20 and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB);
  • Economic and financial analysis of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and other  topical economic policy issues with global impact (e.g. the World Economic Forum);
  • The delivery of the annual UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue (EFD), acting as the principal point of contact with the Ministry of Finance (MOF). 

2. Stakeholder engagement:

  • Building and using an extensive network of contacts in the Chinese system (MOF and the MFA in particular), academic institutions and economic analyst network;
  • Promoting positive relationships with global economic organisations based in China (the AIIB, IMF/World Bank, WEF)
  • Monitoring and reporting on China’s ambitions for new global economic governance initiatives and ideas.

3. Cross-team working:

  • Working closely with colleagues across the wider economic, trade, energy and financial service networks (including Regional Posts);
  • Direct contact and engagement with London policy leads in HMT and the FCO, ensuring a joined up approach.

The job will include travel in China and back to the UK, in-particular for the annual EFD.

  • Proven economics and / or international relations experience, ideally in China.
  • Evidence of ability to work with external stakeholders.
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent.
  • Excellent communications skills and fluent in English and Chinese, both written and spoken. Previous experience of communicating clearly and concisely in English is essential, including the ability to explain technical terms and processes to a non-technical audience.
  • Economics and / or international relations graduate study.
  • Good level of numeracy and working knowledge of the key analytical tools used in economic policy.
  • Experience of monitoring Chinese policy issues.
  • Experience of working for an international institution.
  • Experience delivering big events / visits.
