Main purpose of job:
This is an exciting and dynamic position within the Science & Innovation Network (SIN) for the Latin American region. The job holder will lead the delivery of the UK’s science and innovation work in Chile. This involves analysing the science and innovation landscape in Chile, identifying priority areas for UK/Chile collaboration, building relationships with government ministries and top institutions in the UK and Chile and identifying commercial opportunities. Focal areas for the Embassy’s work to date include polar work (Antarctica and Sub-Antarctica), oceans and climate, future cities, energy and space. The SIN officer will play a key role in delivery of UK activity in relation to Chile’s hosting of COP25 and APEC in 2019/20.
What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
Science and innovation is a key element of our prosperity agenda in Chile. The job holder will work within the Embassy’s prosperity team and will be responsible for:
- setting the strategic direction for our science and innovation work in Chile, matching UK and Chilean priority areas;
- influencing the science and innovation policies of the Chilean government, industry and academia;
- expanding the Embassy’s network of contacts and stimulating strategic relationships between UK and Chilean ministries, universities and research institutes, including through leading on the organisation of inward and outward visits;
- identifying commercial science and innovation opportunities in conjunction with our Embassy commercial team;
- analysing and reporting on the science and innovation landscape in Chile, contributing to briefings for government officials and academic institutions;
- identifying sources of funding and submitting bids as appropriate;
- managing our remaining Newton Fund projects; and
- assisting colleagues within the Prosperity team and other Embassy sections in times of peak activity.
Essential on arrival: Work experience in either science, innovation or development issues. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. An ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and show initiative and enthusiasm. Strong organisational skills, the ability to work under pressure and react quickly to changing priorities with a can-do attitude and high attention to detail.
Desirable: The ideal candidate would also have a diverse network of contacts in government and academia plus knowledge of UK and Chilean strengths in science and innovation.
Monthly meal allowance: CLP $74,000
