The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The Embassy is looking for an intern to work for the Spain-wide trade hub based at the Department for International Trade office in Bilbao.

 

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government organisation that helps UK-based companies to sell their products and services in Spain and other international markets. DIT also assists overseas companies to bring high-quality investment to the UK’s economy.

 

The DIT Spain Trade Hub intern will have the chance to join a dynamic multinational/multicultural environment which will allow him/her to learn and acquire excellent experience of working in the Department for International Trade (DIT).

 

Based at DIT Spain’s offices in Bilbao, their primary function will be to form part of DIT Europe’s Trade Hub. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of DIT Spain’s Export Growth Advisor to manage and provide responses to enquiries from UK companies interested in selling their products and services into the Spanish market. This will include analysis of market opportunities and identification of possible partners and activities for UK companies across a number of different sectors. The intern will play a critical role in ensuring that a high standard of assistence is provided to UK exporters interested in the Spanish market. The intern will also take a leading role in managing the DIT Spain Commercial inbox (a general enquiries mailbox for companies interested in exporting Spain) and triaging enquiries to the relevant officers within the DIT Spain team.

 

This is an ideal opportunity for candidates wishing to put into practice and broaden their business analysis and communication skills. The selected intern needs to be able to multitask, should be proficient in Spanish and English, and be able to adapt flexibly according to the needs of a small team. They should also be able to work remotely should the need arise and collaborate with teams in Madrid and Barcelona.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Support the Export Growth Advisor on the trade hub in:

  • Undertaking market research on behalf of British companies from various sectors interested in exporting to the Spanish market;
  • Research and preparation of off-the-shelf reports on key sectors in Spain to provide market introductory material to clients;
  • Triage of commercial enquiries received via DIT’s Spain’s commercial enquiries inbox;
  • Collection and analysis of data on enquiries received by Spain from the trade hub.
  • Full professional proficiency in English and Spanish, including excellent writing skills (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • High level of motivation and strong will to learn;
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as on own initiative when required;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and Power Point);
  • Ability to look for information about a company or sector on the Internet and obtain information by phone;
  • Able to work under pressure and to juggle competing deadlines;
  • Proactiveness and team worker.
  • Some understanding of trade issues and/or familiarity with the UK and Spanish business sectors would be a bonus.

This is an internship placement for the duration of 5 months for 25 hours/week (5 hours/day) with possibility of extension (provided both parties agree and there is a valid agreement with the university throughout the whole period).

 

The British Embassy will offer a monthly internship allowance € 692.72 per month.

 

The intern will need to arrange and pay for his or her own travel, accommodation, as well as any other costs.

 

The successful internship candidate will be subject to a confirmation of a background check and security clearance, they will be registered on the Spanish Social Security.

 

The internship candidate will be subject to the conditions of agreement between the University and the Embassy.

 

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

 

Requirements:

  • The intern must be studying during the course of full duration of the internship;
  • The Academic Institution should have an agreement with the British Embassy in Madrid;
  • Third party liability insurance which is often supplied by the Academic Institution (when applicable) to cover the intern in the event they are injured on the premises or damage property;
  • Proof of medical coverage for the period of the internship.

 

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
