The British Embassy in Tashkent is part of the world- wide UK diplomatic network working to promote British interests and we are now looking to recruit a Defence Attaché Assistant.

 

The Defence Section at the British Embassy, Tashkent, provides the link between the British State Secretary of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff with the Minster of Defence of the Republic of Uzbekistan Minster of Defence. The Defence Attaché, who is also a senior member of the British Embassy management team, leads the Defence Section and provides the link between the United Kingdom and Republic of Uzbekistan Ministry of Defence.

The Defence Attaché Assistant works directly for the Defence Attaché and deputises in his/her absence from Post. The role would suit someone with Uzbek military experience.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpretation for the Defence Attaché in English/Russian and Uzbek languages. Interpretation will be required for written documents, at formal meetings, at informal meetings, and during journeys across Uzbekistan;
  • Manage the daily calendar of the Defence Attaché, tack and record all meetings and events accepted and declined, liaise with outside agencies to coordinate and schedule meetings with Government Agencies and Embassies;
  • Monitor all social media and television/radio channels in order to produce a weekly summary of Uzbekistan Defence activity including any commentary and analysis. This report will not leave the Defence Office but its content will be placed inside a larger weekly report from the Defence Attaché;
  • Travel with the Defence Attaché and visitors from the United Kingdom to all regions of Uzbekistan and Central Asia when required. Undertake overseas courses as required;
  • Provide leadership and initiative in projects assigned by the Defence Attaché. Take part in the Defence Section decision-making process and continual improvement team;
  • Drafting and interpreting of Note Verbal, official letters, and invitations in the Russian or Uzbek languages;
  • Work with the Defence Section Office Manager in ensuring all money claims are actioned in a timely manner, and all activity is shared between everyone in the Defence Section to ensure it operates as a single team;
  • Drive the Defence Section vehicle in line with UK MoD and Embassy transport policies, ensure the vehicle is inspected before use and the paperwork is completed before and after each journey;
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the Office Assistant and carry out their duties in his or her absence;
  • Ensure a calendar is kept of all activity and key decisions so that a record can be traced;
  • Ensure all leave requests are coordinated with the Defence Attaché to ensure there is always one person in the Office at all times;
  • Build a plan for learning and development – identify areas for personal development.        
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills enabling effective communication in English, Uzbek and Russian (minimum C1 level);
  • Experience (at least two years) preferably in international organisations;
  • Technical knowledge and practical skills;
  • IT literate in Microsoft Office;
  • Ability to multitask, work accurately with attention to details, be resilient under pressure;
  • Good interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with a range of stakeholders;
  • Willing to take initiative, flexibility, responsible and reliable team player.
  • Experienced in using ORACLE systems;
  • Experience in health and safety issues;
  • Staff managerial skills.
