The British Consulate General Los Angeles is seeking a motivated, efficient and innovative Politics & Public Affairs Officer to join our team. 

The Officer works under Los Angeles’ Head of PPA to promote the UK and maintain the UK’s reputation as the US’ partner of choice in business, global security and research collaboration. This has included leading social media campaigns reaching an audience in the millions; helping organise meetings and media opportunities for the British Ambassador and visiting UK government cabinet ministers; and tracking and analysing US political developments. The Officer will also cover some government relations duties, building relationships with decision-makers and opinion-formers around the region on behalf of the UK.

The British Consulate General Los Angeles represents the UK government in Southern California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Hawaii. It is part of a network of British Consulates in the US, working under the leadership of the British Embassy in Washington, DC. Our work involves supporting UK interests and enhancing the UK’s reputation across a wide range of political, commercial, cultural, security and economic activity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Writing press releases and proactively pitching news stories to regional media, including blogs and social media influencers.
  • Carry out the digital media strategy for the PPA team and evaluate the performance of the team’s digital media outreach.
  • Monitor regional news developments and provide political and economic reporting where appropriate, drawing on personal contacts to add value to publicly available material.
  • Travel to other cities and states to meet with journalists, politicians, leaders in commerce, and other stakeholders.
  • Plan and coordinate official VIP visits that support UK policy objectives.
  • Manage the annual Marshall Scholarship selection process and outreach to the alumni of British scholarship programmes and universities.
  • Update the British Embassy in DC on the Consulate’s communications activity on a weekly basis.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
  • Two years’ experience in communications, preferably with a PR firm, news organisation, or governmental or international organisation.
  • A high level of experience of using digital media tools in professional outreach.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Interest and knowledge of politics and foreign affairs, in particular US-UK relations.
  • Media handling skills, including drafting press releases, organizing media events, handling press enquiries.
  • Excellent team-working and interpersonal skills, including experience of working with senior level executives.
  • Proven ability to deliver results on time, every time, while juggling a variety of responsibilities.

Under US State Department requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders or A or NATO visa holders with EAD cards*. The salary for this position is $45,864 annualized.  Salary will be confirmed upon offer of employment. Individuals who are Green Card holders, UK/US dual citizens, and non US taxpaying citizens will be paid a net salary based on a simulated US tax status.

Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local US employment law.
