Department for International Trade roles (DIT)
Investment

The British Embassies in Abu Dhabi and Dubai have a vacancy for a Senior Investment Adviser under the Department for International Trade (DIT).

The jobholder’s core role will be to identify, understand, and build relationships with Emirati investors, directing such investors to UK partners and projects which drive forward core policy priorities, including clean energy, Small-and-Medium sized Enterprises (SME) sector growth, and the development of UK industry.

The jobholder must be creative, strategic, customer-focused, and have an ability to mobilise a wide network – within both UK and UAE governments and private sectors – to build a pipeline of potential investors and projects. The jobholder will have exceptional relationship and account management skills to achieve sustained, sophisticated, and tailored engagement, with the ability to work credibly at senior levels.

The jobholder will be expected to develop and hold a strong knowledge of UK trade and investment policy objectives, UK and UAE and wider Gulf region commercial trends, and trade and investment incentives. Such knowledge will be used to promote the UK’s strengths to UAE audiences.

The role requires the jobholder to support VIP visits into both the UK and out to the UAE, and represent DIT at external events throughout the year (most notably the Dubai Expo which commences on October 2021).

The job can be based in either Abu Dhabi or Dubai with an expectation of some travel between the two Embassies as per work demands.

Duties and responsibilities:

- Strategy

  • Work for the Middle East Region’s Director for Investment on the planning and delivery of the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan (MEAP) Capital Investment Strategy, which comprises large and growth capital investment projects, with a core focus on strategic delivery in the UAE;
  • Increase the profile and understanding of UK capital investment propositions, working closely with DIT counterparts in London plus colleagues from other central UK government departments, such as HM Treasury (HMT), the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), etc.;
  • Develop, position, and implement strategies, conceive and develop activities, and produce events with the goals of generating Capital Investment leads, building relationships and highlighting the strengths of the UK’s market proposition to potential investors;
  • Maintain current knowledge of market trends and incentives in the UK and UAE in order to effectively promote the UK’s strengths to a UAE investor audience.
  • Manage all investment-centred Public Relations within the UAE market, hence working closely with DIT’s in-house Marketing and Communications team. Use such experience to advice DIT investment teams throughout the wider Gulf region.

- Relationship and account management

  • Build and manage a network of high value Emirati investors, working at the highest levels with clients (UAE CEOs and Government Ministers downwards) and with colleagues (UK CEOs and Government Ministers downwards). Execute strategic relationship management processes to support potential investors to focus time on and physically visit the UK (especially to regions outside of London and the South East of England);
  • Engage existing investors who are already active in the UK to maintain/grow their investment, and meet/consolidate relationships with new investors;
  • Forge strong relationships with business institutions, companies, leaders, trade associations, and other key partners. Work to support DIT objectives in collaboration with teams across the Middle East network and with other UK Government Departments;
  • Support UK companies, funds, asset managers, etc. in their capital raising efforts within the region (and particularly within the UAE) by providing introductions, by expert advice, and by shaping commercial approaches;
  • Educating UK-based colleagues across UK government regarding the UAE and wider Middle Eastern markets, hence supporting the development of effective central government policy;
