The British Embassy in Berne is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking for a Chef to join the team. 

The main purpose of this role is to work alongside the Head Chef at the Ambassador's Residence, and assist in the preparation of food for events of all sizes. You will provide support to the Head Chef for activities held in the residence throughout the year, and provide holiday cover, and also cover for any illness leave.

Roles and responsibilities:

In this responsible position, you will be responsible for:

  • Helping to manage and organizing the kitchen at the British Ambassador's residence

  • Assisting with the planning and costing of the menus offered, for the ordering, receiving and management of stock.

  • Supporting the residence team in the organization of various events and contribute towards new and innovative ideas.

  • The monitoring of compliance with hygiene and occupational safety guidelines as well as quality assurance.

  • Fluency at B1 level in English according to CEFR framework*, or equivalent
  • Completed EFZ apprenticeship or long-term experience in the gastronomy field
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in the culinary industry
  • Fluency at C1 level in German according to CEFR framework*, or equivalent;

This is a permanent contract for 16 working hours per week.

Gross monthly salary is CHF 2406. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Swiss/ UK public holidays per year.

FCDO is committed to continual learning and development. The Embassy will provide funding in line with L&D requirements and a variety of learning and development is provided throughout the year both directly at post and virtually through the FCDO International Academy. There will be opportunities to attend training, lectures etc. on the job.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Swiss employment law.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearance.

The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for Switzerland in order to apply. All applicants should have the right to live and work in Switzerland.
