MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Digital Diplomacy and Communications Officer will play a central role delivering the British Embassy’s Public Diplomacy activity using digital communication tools and campaigning approaches to amplify and underpin our policy work, and achieve our cultural diplomacy objectives.

The successful candidate will work as part of the British Embassy's Public Diplomacy Team, and closely with the Deputy Head of Mission (Deputy Ambassador) and routinely with Her Majesty’s Ambassador to help promote the UK values and Embassy objectives through the effective use of digital and multimedia tools and techniques. The candidate must have a strong digital background, relevant work experience and an active interest in, and understanding of, the digital media, as well as Philippines and global current affairs. She or he will enjoy being in a high profile environment with opportunity to work with senior politicians, influencers, journalists, activists, and figures across public life. There is some (paid) out of hours work required, so applicants should have an interest in following digital channels.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role would suit someone who is highly digitally aware, creative and interested in understanding the role of digital media in politics and public communications campaigns. The role holder will be a central to all parts Embassy’s work, with genuine scope to be involved in shaping and delivering our messages and amplifying UK policy objectives.

  • Manage the British Embassy’s digital platforms – Gov.UK website, Embassy’s intranet, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram; coordinate with policy officers to help plan and implement innovative Embassy digital campaigns and communication plans; maintain a high editorial quality content and digital output; monitor digital trends; and identify and explore new digital opportunities in the Philippines and in the region.
  • Work pro-actively across all embassy teams to advise on and support the development of digital messaging and campaigns.
  • Work with the Public Diplomacy team and others across the Embassy to create impactful campaigns, across different channels, using diverse and effective networks in traditional and social media.
  • Identify opportunities for the Ambassador, diplomats and representatives of the British Embassy to engage publicly to enhance the UK’s reputation and outreach.
  • Develop material to support public events, visits, campaigns, announcements, and major occasions in UK and Philippines.
  • Identify innovative approaches, exploring new techniques and networks to ensure that the British Embassy is maximising its outreach and impact; monitoring, analysing and reporting on trends and engagement.
  • Be part of the Embassy crisis preparation team, undergoing learning and practice of how to conduct embassy communications, in particular digital communications, in a crisis situation (e.g. a political situation, or an event such as a natural disaster that impacts a lot of British nationals).
  • Manage Embassy communications received to UK in Philippines on digital channels, eg Facebook, and emails, responding in a professional style in coordination with relevant teams.
  • Be an active organiser of and participant in all Embassy events.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS /:

You might not necessarily have worked in an embassy or foreign policy environment to succeed in this role. We encourage a broad range of backgrounds and experience in communications and public affairs.

  •  Proven experience working in communications, public affairs, media or related field.
  • Strong, proven digital media skills, including creating material on behalf of an organisation for public channels.
  • Acute awareness of language, sensitivities and wider considerations when publishing on behalf of a high profile organisation.
  • A passion for the internet and digital media, preferably with extensive experience in digital content creation, content management, social community management, social listening, web editing, graphic design, digital photography and video production.
  • Aware of the latest digital trends and strong practical knowledge of using digital tools (social media, blogs, listicles, sharable videos and articles, curated and crowd-sourced content, infographics).
  • Ability to write digital editorial content, plan and implement digital campaigns and weekly digital content; prepare social media analytics and evaluation report.
  • A broad understanding of the Philippines political, economic, media and cultural environments and an active interest in Philippines and global current affairs; and awareness of the role of the UK.
  • Exceptional communication skills (both oral and written) in both English and Tagalog.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with colleagues to meet tight deadlines, prioritising workloads as required.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office.
  • Existing network of contacts in the Philippines media and public events organisation

The British Embassy offers a competitive compensation package, 36-hour work week, guaranteed 13th and 14th month pay, 20 days paid annual leave (calculated on Pro-rata basis if joined after 1 January), extensive medical insurance, life insurance and access to a guaranteed 5 days of learning opportunities a year.
