Main purpose of job

Under the guidance of the Residence Manager, the main responsibility is for the day to day culinary requirements at the Official Residence. To ensure all catering matters and kitchen functions run smoothly to enable the High Commissioner to perform their duties with minimum diversion and attention to household matters. The role involves co-ordinating day to day catering, official dinners, receptions and larger events. You will also be expected to ensure that the food served at Benmar is of high quality and represents value for money.

Roles and responsibilities

  • To plan and prepare lunch and dinner (but not limited to) daily for the High Commissioner and any house guests.
  • Menu planning and preparation of meals for visitors to the house in consultation with the Residence Manager and/or the High Commissioner.
  • To calculate and track menu costing.
  • In consultation with the Residence Manager and/or the High Commissioner, menu planning and preparation of catering requirements for receptions, official dinners and other events, either in their entirety or together with any outside caterers hired.
  • Sourcing and procurement of quality local produce and ingredients, ensuring there is an adequate supply of stocks at all times (a driver will be available for transport to and from the shops / local suppliers).
  • To ensure the store cupboard is always well stocked, replacing basic items as required.
  • Food storage. To ensure all food and supplies are stored correctly, with comprehensive stock rotation.
  • Supplier relations. To add to the supplier database, based on quality produce, service and value for money. The database is held centrally so all staff are able to access information, contact names & numbers.
  • To bake cakes, breads & pastries, make preserves, pickles, marinades, sauces and all other items as requested.
  • Health & Hygiene. To be responsible for all health, hygiene and sanitation practices in the residence kitchen. This will include educating guests and staff, as and when required, to ensure all health & safety requirements are met.
  • To maintain a high standard of cleanliness in the kitchen, ensuring the kitchen floor is washed last thing before leaving.
  • To supervise the work of any other domestic staff member asked to assist with food preparation.
  • To store and maintain an inventory of all cooking equipment, liaising with the Events and Residence Manager for disposal and procurement of items needed.
  • Ad hoc duties and projects as assigned by the Events and Residence Manager.

Essential on arrival:

  • Educated to a minimum of CXC level (Inc. Math & English).
  • 2 years previous experience as a chef / cook or proven track record in a similar role.
  • Hygiene certificate.

Language requirements:

Language: English

Level of language required:  An excellent command of the English language is essential

  • Relevant qualification in catering.

This role is open to anyone with status to work and reside in Barbados. The role will involve close collaboration with internal & external departments and stakeholders so excellent interpersonal skills are essential, as are strong staff management skills. A strong organisational focus is required to ensure all executive administrative duties are completed accurately and delivered in a timely manner. The successful candidate must be comfortable at conversing at all levels within the organisation, demonstrate initiative, common sense and be able to manage a small team with minimal supervision. The highest level of personal integrity, honesty, confidentiality, reliability and professionalism is essential for this role.

  • The period of probation for this role in 6 months, though the British High Commission reserves the right to extend this in order to fairly assess performance.
  • A full induction and coaching will be arranged for the successful applicant.
  • The annual starting salary for this part time position is BD$ 25,531.
  • A comprehensive mandatory pension plan is offered after successful completion of the probation period. Subject to plan provider approval, group medical coverage is offered after the first month of service.
  • This is a part time position at 25 hours per week to be worked flexibly. Core office hours are 7.45am-4pm, Monday -Thursday and 8am-1pm on Fridays.
  • Annual leave entitlement is 16 days rising to 20 days after one year of service. A combination of up to 14 UK and local public holiday days are also observed.

Working patterns: 

The ability to work flexibly is essential as the role regularly requires working outside of office hours, evenings and weekends.
