The British Consulate General in Istanbul is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic, consular and prosperity interests overseas and is now looking for a Local Liaison Assistant to support the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The NCA leads the UK's fight to cut serious and organised crime, protecting the public by disrupting and bringing to justice those serious and organised criminals who pose the highest risk to the UK.

The purpose of this role is to cover maternity leave in order to provide flexible support, linguistic skills and cultural advice to the NCA International Liaison Officer (ILO) network in Turkiye.  Success will be measured by assisting delivery on NCA priority threat areas, including organised immigration crime and migration. The role will require building skills and knowledge on key areas, as well as facilitating excellent bilateral cooperation with partners in host law enforcement and judiciary.  Sound strategic knowledge of the threat from organised immigration crime in Turkiye and migration routes into and through Turkiye will be expected to be developed. Practical support to ILOs will also be required in the form of administrative, written and linguistic duties.

 

What will the new hire be expected to achieve?

  • Regular meetings with hosts throughout Turkiye, particularly within Istanbul and at times Ankara. Translate documents and provide interpretive support at meetings and other engagements;
  • Provide administrative support to the organised immigration crime lead officer as required.  Maintain project filing system that is thorough, retrievable and auditable.  Supply logistical support for visiting officers, and assist visits by Turkish officers to the UK;
  • Make enquiries and exchange information with host law enforcement agencies in response to incoming information and ongoing joint co-operation. Liaise with partners across government within the British Embassy (Ankara). Consulate (Istanbul), general Mission staff and foreign law enforcement liaison officers;
  • Undertake extensive analysis, research and development on intelligence received from NCA and hosts on priority threat areas.  Develop in-depth strategic and tactical knowledge of these. Develop in-depth knowledge of Turkish legislation surrounding organised crime;
  • Support Project Management and delivery;
  • Provide on call support (out of hours) to NCA office and Turkiye ILO network as required.
  • Excellent command (both oral and written) of English and Turkish, Common European Framework level/equivalent C1 or above*; Ability to interpret and translate varied and technical documents from Turkish to English and vice versa.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and find flexible innovative solutions;
  • Ability to regularly travel and attend meetings in Turkiye and Europe, often at short notice;
  • Strong IT skills (including MS Office and Excel).
  • Previous professional experience within an overseas mission, international projects or law enforcement agencies;  
  • University degree or equivalent.

This is a full-time temporary contract with a duration of 12 months, for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week to cover for a maternity leave.

The monthly base salary for this position is 1,447.61 USD gross AO level + 539.13 USD responsibility allowance (gross) + 258.28 USD on-call allowance (gross). Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of 2 months.
