Main purpose of job:

To provide trade and investment support for DIT Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

Roles and responsibilities:

Opening Markets

You will work with the Barbados Country Trade Director and the Regional Trade Policy manager to help identify issues that inhibit access to the markets of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines for British exporters and investors in Key Sectors (“Market Access Barriers”) and accurately log these barriers on the Digital Market Access Service (“DMAS”). 

Trade Support

You  will log your sector interactions with British companies on the CRM system” DataHub” and support the Barbados Country Trade Director and the DIT Regional Director to ensure management of the most important relationships on a systematic account management basis.  Where required you will provide assistance to UK businesses by delivering information on the general economic and political situation in the Eastern Caribbean and identifying relevant contacts.

Promotion

You will research, monitor and log opportunities for UK companies in the Exporting Is Great Portal (“EIG”) and develop, expand and maintain distribution lists across identified sectors to alert UK companies to opportunities in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.  You will promote these opportunities and assist preparing relevant material to help attract UK exporters and investors to Barbados and the markets mentioned above. You will work with the communications team in Barbados, the relevant Marketing and Communications (MARCOMS) sector lead and the LATAC MARCOMS team to help promote the UK offer particularly in these identified sectors, using material developed by DIT so as to further develop Eastern Caribbean perceptions of the creativity and innovation of British industry, showcasing the UK’s unique strengths as a destination for Eastern Caribbean overseas investment and champion global free trade and UK trade values. You will assist with planning and logistics for trade missions and trade promotion events and attend local trade exhibitions and events as required. You will attend meetings of UK business groups and trade associations as required. You will maintain the local database of UK companies and sources of supply in key sectors, so you are able to direct local queries accordingly.  

Delivery

You are expected to maintain a working knowledge of the Eastern Caribbean economies and political developments. You are expected to maintain a working knowledge of the Eastern Caribbean economies and political developments. You will work closely with the Resident British Commissioners and their teams in the Eastern Caribbean region, to build market intelligence as it relates to the upcoming commercial needs of government and private sector entities in St. Lucia and the wider markets in the Eastern Caribbean.

You are expected to undertake other related activities as may be assigned from time to time, and participate in broader activities of the UK missions in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, e.g. responding to crises, assisting with major visits, leave cover for line manager and other colleagues.  

Essential on arrival:  

  • Understanding of Eastern Caribbean business environment.
  • Understanding of trade and investment.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer literacy across all MS platforms and other data platforms with the ability to learn new computer software quickly.
  • Excellent planning and administrative skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as a part of a larger, virtual team.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
