Driver / Messenger

Main purpose of job:

Official transport is an important tool that allows the Japan Network to deliver a wide range of HMG (Her Majesty’s Government)’s objectives. The driver will provide safe and excellent driving services to the Ambassador, Embassy staff and VIP/VVIP visitors when required. Other responsibilities include vehicle maintenance, transport booking, and administrative support to the team. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Role 1 (75% of your time)

  • You will drive an official vehicle safely and efficiently for official passengers, in line with Japanese laws and regulations. Your duties will include: 
  • Inspection - daily check of tyre pressures, hydraulic fluid, oil etc. 
  • Keep vehicle clean, safe, and serviceable in your care 
  • Make sure all passenger use seat-belts 
  • Record all journeys accurately 
  • Report any defects of vehicle or issue immediately 
  • Act as a Messenger, and collect & deliver official letters in a careful manner 
  • You will be asked to ensure the confidentiality of customers’ information (e.g. conversation in the vehicle), and not to disclose to any person. 

Role 2 (20% of your time)

  • You will manage transport bookings and provide administrative support to the Corporate Services team. For detail, you will handle a number of requests, by checking/updating the transport calendar, responding to emails/phone calls in English/Japanese, and reporting to the transport manager. 
  • You will need to build a good understanding of our transport policy.

Role 3 (5% of your time)

  • You will be asked to do ad-hoc tasks as corporate contributions (e.g. preparation for a crisis, supporting receptions and events, etc) for the embassy. Detail is to be discussed with your line manager. 

Resources managed (staff and expenditure): 

  • 1-2 official vehicles will be assigned to you, to arrange insurance and car maintenance services. 

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals. 

All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills. 

Working patterns:

Office hours are 0900-1730, Monday to Friday. However, you will occasionally be asked to work outside of office hours (e.g. for an early morning or late pick up) or to be ready as ‘on call’. It is desirable for you to be situated near the embassy (within 1h distance by car or public transport). Overtime will be paid with salary or by time off in lieu (you can take leave on an alternative date). 

When you have an early morning appointment, you may finish work earlier than usual. Similarly, if you have evening appointment, you may come to the office later. 


You will need to submit 2 official certifications with your application. 

  • Driving Record Certificate (3 years) – Unten Kiroku Shomeisyo 
  • Certification of Driver’s License History – Unten Menkyo Keireki Shomeisyo 
  • Japanese Driving Licence (Standard - Futsu) 
  • Knowledge on Route & Traffic in Tokyo, Japan 
  • Good Communication Skill and Team skill 
  • No Criminal Record 
  • Basic Computer Skill (Word, Excel, outlook emails) 

Language requirements:

Language: Japanese ane English

Level of language required: Fluent Japanese and basic level English or vice-versa. 

  • Japanese Driving Licence (Medium – Chugata or Large – Ogata) 
  • Good English 
  • Over 3 years working experiences as a driver

We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.
