Main purpose of job:

Trade & investment is at the centre of the UK government’s foreign policy objectives. You will be working to support delivery of the UK’s ambition to increase exports to the Andean region, using the UK-Andean Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as the platform for increasing business exchanges. You will be the main person in the Department for International Trade (DIT) Peru team supporting activity in these areas, taking direction from the Country Director and the Regional Andean Markets lead, as part of our Andean sub-regional structure.

You will identify, prioritise and work to resolve the Market Access Barriers (MABs) faced by UK companies in this region, and especially in Peru, while working with relevant Peruvian authorities on the country-specific elements of the UK Andean FTA. You will also monitor and report on developments in the wider trade policy scenario between the UK and Peru, and in other Andean markets as needed.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Market Access Barriers (MABs):

  • Lead identification of new MABs in Peru and the Andean region in conjunction with sector leads, while working to prioritise those of greatest economic value to the UK;
  • Develop and implement strategies and projects aiming to remove MABs in Peru and Andean sub-region, working in conjunction with the Regional Andean lead and relevant colleagues from other Embassies;
  • Support Country Director in high-level engagements linked to top priority barriers in Peru;
  • Oversee use of funds devolved to Post for MAB resolution, ensuring value-for-money at all times and that spend in achieved within deadlines and allocated budget.

Trade Policy:

  • Act as central contact point for trade-related Embassy and Regional engagement with Peruvian authorities such as, but not limited to, Ministry of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy & Finance.
  • Support Regional Andean lead in effective delivery of the institutional commitments of the UK-Andean FTA, including logistics preparations as needed;
  • Support the DIT Country Director in link to wider Economic Diplomacy work, such as OECD accession agenda and other topics as directed;

Monitor and report relevant developments in Peru and other Andean market’s trade policy agenda, such as CPTPP membership, WTO reform developments and other initiatives on a case-by-case basis, feeding into regional reporting mechanisms.

Across both MABs and Trade Policy, you will update, coordinate and draw links between wider DIT team members, sharing knowledge and expertise to help inform their business development across a variety of sectors.

Line-management of 1 (one) intern; monitoring of delegated budget for projects (TBC).

Language requirements:

Language: English, Spanish

Level of language required: Fluency in both

Essential on arrival: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Trade, Public Policy, Economics, International Relations, International Business or related subjects.
  • Relevant experience in trade policy, regulation or related fields.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal, communication and relationship management skills.
  • Evidence of delivering positive results through collaboration and networks.
  • Evidence of excellent written and spoken communication (English and Spanish).

Desirable:

  • Prior work experience in trade policy or negotiating teams.
  • Knowledge of UK policy and business landscape.

In conjunction with your line manager, you will identify and develop a learning and development plan, including relevant training, to support your role and future career interests.

The successful candidate is expected to commence employment as soon as possible.
