Main purpose of job:

Lead marketing strategy that ensures successful marketing activities across the Japan Network are delivered on time and within budget through effective project and resource management.


Act as the lead marketing advisor to other Japan Network departments, particularly  trade and investment sector teams, to ensure objectives that require marketing support are fully met while ensuring MCM colleagues are guided and adequately skilled and resourced . 

Ensure global branding campaigns are effectively localised for the Japan market and identify opportunities for cross-cutting thematic or sectoral activities or wider campaigns in Japan.


Roles and responsibilities: 

Excellent people management and leadership (20%) including:

  • Line management of marketing manager and Marketing Co-ordinator for GREAT Campaign/counter-signing for up to three marketing and communications staff:
  • Oversight of staff’s stakeholder engagement (partners across government, private sector partners, sponsors and outside agencies)
  • Confident engagement with senior management, providing recommendations and supporting C5 head of section; acting head of section when required; role in Crisis Media team.

Provide strategic direction and effective project management (50%):

  • Set and evaluate targeted, project-based marketing strategies in line with Japan Network’s regular business planning and key objectives.
  • Work in partnership with Department of International Trade’s individual trade and investment teams, including Life Sciences, Technology, Food and Drink and Automotive, to focus marketing activity on the areas of greatest opportunity, improving perceptions of the UK and supporting DIT to deliver its outcomes.
  • Support the DIT trade team on the promotion of the CEPA Free Trade Agreement between Japan and the UK, improving perceptions of British exports and helping build partnerships between Japanese companies and UK exporters.’
  • Support the investment team by raising the profile of specific opportunities in the UK and promoting those opportunities to large Japanese companies to generate high value leads’.
  • Work closely with Marketing Manager to oversee project management of marketing activities within MCM.
  • Evaluate and utilise latest digital marketing tools; source accurate market research; analyse data; ensure activities are cost-effective through evaluation of clear KPIs.

Act as Japan Network’s  brand manager (15%):

  • Responsible for adherence to FCDO and Department of International Trade (DIT) global brand guidelines, in communication with global and regional brand managers for DIT. 
  • Ensure delivery of high-impact content, including physical marketing collateral, imagery, video and multi-media.
  • Apply marketing insight and deep understanding of Japanese market and trends to appropriate global HMG campaigns to targeted audiences.

Lead integration of Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) priorities into Japan Network marketing activities (15%) including:

  • Understanding of global HMG priorities, Department of International Trade priorities in Japan and APAC region, internal planning and monitoring tools such OASIS model and Japan Network country business plan.
  • Identify funding needs, bidding for and managing FY marketing funds and ad-hoc campaign funds, (including global GREAT campaigns and project-based budgets).
  • Secure and manage private sponsorship for marketing campaigns, ensuring effective relationship management with sponsors
  • Effective evaluation reporting to senior management, the Japan Network and external stakeholders.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):


  • Responsible for team of 5 marketing and digital communications staff: Line management x2; Countersigning x 3.
  • Budgets: FY marketing spend, GREAT campaign and project-based funding
  • Travel, entertainment budget and representational requirement budget.
  • External agencies and sponsors (project based).

We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals. 

All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills

The British Embassy, Tokyo supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, working remotely and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management. 

-          5+  years’ experience in communications position with a public or private-sector organisation.

-          Undertaken relevant studies related to the field of marketing.

-          Experience managing diverse staff.

-          Proven skills in strategy design, digital marketing and managing complex communications campaigns. Experience working with and briefing external agencies.

-          Deep country knowledge and proven ability to engage Japanese audiences.

-          Strong IT skills, (including standard Microsoft Office programmes and familiarity with latest digital tools).


Language requirements: 

Language: English and Japanese

Level of language required: English (spoken and written) fluent; Japanese (spoken and written) business level.  

 

-          Holds relevant industry qualification or certification in communications, marketing and/or project management.

-          Expertise in relevant digital platforms, production and techniques.

-          Familiarity with government communications, policy and priorities.

-          Budget management skills and experiences.
