The United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations in Geneva represents the interests and policies of the UK at the UN and is recruiting a highly motivated Disarmament Attaché to contribute to the delivery of UK   priorities for multilateral arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament, in Geneva and New York as well as elsewhere as necessary, representing the UK   and working closely with colleagues in London to support policy development. The position has a particular focus, and takes the day-to-day lead, on conventional weapons (Small Arms and Light Weapons, land mines, cluster munitions) and the associated treaties and international instruments.


Main responsibilities will include:

  • Develop a wide-ranging network of internal and external stakeholders, to include the UN and Convention Secretariats, other member states and the EU Delegation, relevant Whitehall departments, and civil society;
  • In support of the Permanent Representative, represent the UK at arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament meetings and influence Geneva stakeholders in support of UK interests, taking a lead in working-level negotiations;
  • Follow and provide analysis on developments within the conventional weapon related treaties and international instruments and also the UN’s Disarmament Machinery, in particular the First Committee of the UN General Assembly;
  • In support of the UK’s UN Reform agenda, engage with the UN, States and relevant stakeholders to enhance cooperation and mutual understanding of practices regarding effective and transparent financial management of disarmament conventions / ISUs budgets;
  • Work closely with London to develop UK policy on arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament issues;
  • Make a contribution to the corporate life of the Mission.
  • Fluency in English (both oral and written);
  • At least 12 months of professional experience of the UN / multilateral system, including experience representing a Member State or organisation in face-to-face meetings, preferably in non-proliferation, disarmament and / or arms control;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with respect for diversity;
  • IT literacy.
