The British Embassy Algiers is looking for an enthusiastic self-starter to take on this exciting and interesting role of Counter Terrorism and Extremism Network Officer.

The job holder will essentially have a split role working across two functions (Department for Transport [DfT] and Foreign & Commonwealth Office [FCO]) as part of a new global Counter Terrorism and Extremism Network (CTEN).

The job holder will develop and maintain effective working relationships with the Algerian government to help deliver a number of core objectives of improving aviation security standards in-country, and working on counter terrorism (CT) and broader security issues.


The role is for a fixed-term contract for 12 months. Subject to operational requirements and funding, the position may be extended for a further 24 months.


Duties and responsibilities:

As part of their split role, the job holder will be expected to manage the Aviation Security Liaison Office (ASLO), working closely with Corporate Services Team (CST) at post, DfT colleagues in London, the Host Government(s) and other countries' aviation security teams, as well as airlines and security companies.  

A key part of the work involves diplomacy and liaison with the various Host government authorities on a range of security issues. The job holder will also have an important liaison function with the ability to report important information accurately to Embassy colleagues and London stakeholders. They will work closely with the Embassy Programmes Team and Senior Management in delivering progress towards the Embassy’s CT goals. 

The job holder will have the following areas of responsibility:

  • Managing a portfolio of security projects (that will include aviation security training, staff mentoring and the provision of security equipment)
  • Provide high-quality analysis and reporting to Embassy colleagues and to London stakeholders on developments within the  security system
  • Provide strategic awareness and support for the Embassy Programming team, ensuring coherence between the teams
  • Provide effective and efficient office support including record keeping, organising meetings/ events, drafting of Note Verbales and other formal correspondence
  • Lead on all administrative procedures: processing incoming and outgoing post as well as telephone and email enquiries
  • Ensure expenditure records in-country are kept up to date and in line with FCO and UK DfT processes, manage any Programme budget and office expense reconciliation
  • Initiate project proposals and take responsibility for their planning, financial management and delivery
  • Monitor, assess, evaluate and report on local aviation security standards and procedures (particularly during or following capacity building assistance)
  • Monitor local media and other sources for news and developments
  • Provide advice and briefing to key stakeholders on Aviation/ CT security matters.

The job holder will need to have the ability to multi-task and manage office budgets. They will require a high degree of stakeholder engagement skills, an awareness of local protocols and issues, project management and financial management experience, as well as experience working with officials from the host government and collaborating with colleagues and counterparts based abroad.

The Embassy offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for the role, including net salary of 91,443.18 DZD per month including *15,000 DZD allowances, and 25 days of paid leave annually along with 14 days of paid public holidays.

*Allowances are not payable to staff who receive official provision for such expenditure in some other form.


Conditioned working hours are 37.5 hours per week. Normal working hours at the British Embassy are 08:00-15:30 Sunday to Thursday. The successful candidate should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as out of hours work will occasionally be necessary. Time off in lieu will be offered for out of hours work. There may also be some domestic and international travel required.

Process:
