To lead the Embassy’s engagement with China on global trade policy and governance in support of efforts to define and deliver our post-Brexit future trading relationship.

1.       Lead on

  • the Embassy’s engagement on China’s multilateral trade policy, including improved Chinese participation in key WTO mechanisms and fora, and WTO-compliant application of subsidies and trade defence measures.
  • topical/fast-moving trade policy issues with global impact – including tackling steel overcapacity; US and EU-China trade.
  • global and international trade policy elements in the annual UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue and Joint Economic and Trade Commission

2.       Build and use an extensive network of contacts within the Chinese system, academic institutions and other Embassies to

  • track China’s Free Trade Agreements with third countries: understand China’s priority asks and red lines, and assess how much these agreements deliver for each party
  • monitor and report on China’s ambitions for new Regional Trade Agreements, such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and the Free Trade Area Asia Pacific

3.       Work closely with colleagues across the China Economic Network (Beijing plus four consulates) and DIT China to

  • support engagement and dialogue with China on the future trade relationship, including through the trade review and a new Trade Working Group
  • ensure a joined-up approach and trade policy training  – in particular across the wider DIT-FCO network
  • support the implementation of Prosperity Fund Programmes, including on Global Trade.

  • Proven trade, economics and / or international relations experience, ideally in China.
  • Evidence of ability to work with external stakeholders.
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent.
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Economics and / or international relations graduate study.
  • Good level of numeracy and working knowledge of the key analytical tools used in economic / trade policy.
  • Experience of monitoring Chinese policy issues.
  • Experience of working for an international institution.
  • Experience delivering big events / visits.

This vacancy is for fixed-term employment (10 months).

Appointment of the successful candidates will also be subject to Overseas Security Clearance. Due to the security clearance level required for this position, this vacancy is open only to the following:

  • Nationals from the UK who have spent at least two (2) years out of the last five (5) years in the UK
  • Nationals from the UK who have Diplomatic status in China ('W' visa holder)

Necessary security clearance for this position can take at least two months and will require completion of a separate security interview which can take place either in the UK or in China (dates to be notified). Candidates must be available for this security interview to be considered for this role.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, 22 days annual leave in pro rata, Annual Performance Related Pay, In Year Bonus based on performance, commercial insurance package including accidental insurance, medical insurance, and business travel insurance, various trainings for this position, work life balance and diversity and inclusion organization. The gross starting salary is an abated monthly salary of CNY 35,742/month.
