Main purpose of job:


Defence and security represent two sectors where three is an unrivalled relationship between the US and the UK. The UK Department for International trade plays a key role in promoting and supporting transatlantic trade and investment in these key sectors. In particular, DIT assist UK companies with innovative technologies identify and access opportunities in the US defence, security and cyber markets. Additionally, DIT support US companies from these sectors to set up and grow a footprint in the UK.


The advertised post, based at the British Embassy in Washington DC, is for a Trade & Investment Associate (TIA) supporting the Head of Sector – Defence & Security. He/she will engage with engage both US and UK companies to support their international business goals, as well as engage with both British and American stakeholders to facilitate greater transatlantic trade and investment.


 


Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Support the Head of Sector – Defence & Security with the development and execution of DIT’s efforts to grow defence, security and cyber exports from the UK to the USA as well as increase foreign direct investment in these sectors into the UK.
  • Provided market-entry guidance to US and UK companies based on the specific needs of clients’ business models, industries and global conditions.
  • Manage projects and activity that develop the pipeline of export and investment deals towards goal of meeting internal DIT trade and investment targets.
  • Organise trade missions and visit programs for US and UK delegations, as well as compile market research reports and sector-specific briefings on behalf of clients.
  • Undertake proactive research and marketing efforts to identify potential investors to the UK in the defence and security sectors.
  • Attend relevant events and compile market intelligence
  • Build and manage a database of key contacts in the industry.
  • Provide operational and administrative support to the wider DIT team as and when required.
  • Liaise with both internal Embassy teams and external HMG contacts.

 


Additional duties may include:             


  • Maintain a strong knowledge and understanding of US Federal Government agencies, inter-department relationships and procurement policies.
  • Represent the Embassy and/or DIT at networking events both during normal business hours and in evenings/mornings as needed.

Support non-DIT activities and events in support of wider-HMG goals, including assisting Embassy colleagues during a time of crisis.


Essential on arrival: 1-3 years work experience; Bachelors Degree in a related field; team player; excellent communication skills (in person and over the phone/email); project management experience; experience working in US and/or UK defence, homeland security or law enforcement sectors


Desirable: Understanding of international business environment
