The UK Mission to the European Union (UKMis) in Brussels is part of a worldwide network of 270 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

UKMis’ Political & Engagement Section is the hub responsible for building the HMG’s networks in Brussels. We do so by enhancing the mission’s skills and capability to influence with impact while developing and implementing its strategy for engaging externally.

The Engagement Intern will be responsible to provide support in measuring our impact.They will measure the mission’s engagement impact with media and other stakeholders, take responsibility for a campaign to be defined, as well as provide support to the Comms Team with media briefings.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Evaluation: Producing weekly and monthly reports that analyse media reporting of the UK and evaluate the impact of our media, digital and engagement work in Brussels;
  • Campaigns: Supporting strategy and delivery of a mini-campaign around a key priority for the UK, such as on our human rights and values agenda, or our work to promote the UK’s security, sustainability or prosperity capabilities;
  • Supporting colleagues to communicate and engage better: Updating our influencing toolkit that supports policy colleagues in their engagement and communication with colleagues in the EU ;
  • Admin support: Supporting the delivery and logistics of our external engagement. That includes setting up briefings for media, our Public Diplomacy events or press conferences for key moments around the UK / EU negotiations. It also includes logistical organisation of internal meetings, ad-hoc support such as printing/scanning documents.

The Mission provides an extensive programme of learning and development opportunities, that will help successful applicants in their internship, and also for their wider career. Some of the available training includes on European politics and how the EU Institutions work, networking and public diplomacy training and language training. We also hold regular teach-ins with media based in Brussels and on social media.

  • Fluency in English - C2 or above;
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office programmes, including Excel and Word;
  • Good knowledge of the EU, European and British politics;
  • High-quality written communications and drafting skills;
  • Interest and proven experience in media, social media (especially Twitter) and communications. 
  • Proven interest and experience in social media programmes, like Tweetdeck and Brandwatch;
  • Knowledge of European languages, including French and German.

This is a full-time professional immersion traineeship with the duration of 3 months, 36.25 hours net for 5 working days a week.

The professional immersion indemnity for this position is €1,000.00.

Additional benefits including allowances for public transport and daily subsistence costs of €7 per work day are also provided. Interns have access to 1 day of paid annual leave and 1 day of unpaid leave per month of internship.

As the nature of the events-related work will occasionally entail working in the early evening, TOIL (time off in lieu) is given.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

Professional Immersion Traineeship Requirements:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years old;
  • Proof of valid medical coverage for the period of the internship (European Health Insurance Card);
  • The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance;
  • Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.

Visa/passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
