Department for International Trade roles (DIT)
Department for International Trade (DIT)

The Department for International Trade (DIT) supports UK based businesses to export globally and encourages overseas companies to look to the UK as their global partner of choice and as a land alive with investment opportunities.

This is an opportunity to join the DIT team in the British High Commission Singapore as the Marketing Manager for DIT Singapore on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will lead on designing and delivering marketing and communications strategies and activities for key areas of focus for DIT Singapore.

One day you could be working on a Ministerial visit, the next organising a reception for a trade mission or a media trip to the UK to promote British food—and all the while, you’ll also be shaping a strategic approach which will make sure that all your individual activities have an impact far beyond the sum of their parts. Initially you’ll focus on Food and Drink, as well as supporting colleagues on Infrastructure, Technology, and Healthcare, but priorities will evolve and you’ll have opportunities to shape the future focus of your role.

You will be part of a supportive and collaborative network in the British High Commission, working closely with trade and investment colleagues in DIT and the FCO Communications team, as well as taking strategic direction from the DIT Marketing Hub in Hong Kong, and working with the London-based Marketing and GREAT teams to successfully deliver evidence-based, insight-driven marketing activity.

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

This is a new role, and its purpose is to bring strategic marketing direction and delivery to the DIT team in Singapore. The initial focus of this role will be to deliver the Food is GREAT campaign, which is already designed and funded until March 2018, and to support on our high value priority areas: Infrastructure, Technology and Healthcare. Throughout, you will develop a more strategic and coordinated approach to marketing in DIT Singapore.

This is a part time role, so while the ideal candidate will come with a broad range of experience and capability across marketing and communications disciplines and the work will be exciting and challenging, we’ll also make sure that the deliverables are commensurate to the hours worked.

The initial key deliverables for this role are:

  • Food is GREAT: This campaign to promote the UK’s food and drink sector will run to March 2018. The key events are already defined, but you will work with the Food Lead to deliver those events as well as developing a social media and PR approach and content for the campaign.
  • Support for other sectors: DIT’s current focus areas are Infrastructure, Technology, and Healthcare. These areas already have defined marketing activity, and you will support your colleagues through advice or hands on support to bring those plans to life, evaluate successes, and to identify cross cutting opportunities.
  • Emerging priorities: Whether it’s a Ministerial visit or a new GREAT campaign activation, you will lead on or support others to deliver events, marketing, and PR around it.
  • Developing a more strategic approach: Working within the wider strategic direction for Marketing and with the Regional Marketing Hub, you will help DIT Singapore to take a more coordinated and focused approach to marketing and shape the marketing plans for future years through the yearly business planning process which starts in December.

You’ll be expected to be able to deliver a wide range of marketing and communications activity, from event management to PR and social media. You’ll also need to ensure that your work is aligned closely with DIT’s overall marketing strategy—with support and guidance from colleagues in Singapore, Hong Kong, and London who lead on strategy—and evaluated in line with DIT guidance. Project and budget management is also key to ensure that you deliver on time and ensure value for money.

  • Demonstrable and relevant professional experience that shows skills and a track record of successful delivery in a range of communications disciplines, including marketing, PR, events, and digital.
  • A creative, can-do approach, combined with high standards for delivery and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong team work and collaboration skills, including confidence in suggesting new ideas and challenging senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including demonstrable experience and ability to write copy for traditional media and social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
  • Experience in B2B or government services marketing
  • Partnership, sponsorship, and business development experience
  • Experience of working with marketing/ PR/ communications agencies
  • Experience, training, or qualification in digital/ social media/ content marketing is a definite advantage
