Main purpose of job:

The job holder will support and report to Invest Northern Ireland’s Regional Trade and Investment Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa.

They will manage the office support functions and associated administrative work, and support the Regional Manager’s work in the region. In addition to promoting Northern Ireland as a location for investment and higher education, they will undertake market research to assist Northern Ireland companies to export to the region. They will liaise with major players across selected industries to build up a network of potential clients / customers / representatives and identify supply chain opportunities for Northern Ireland businesses to facilitate commercial deals and partnerships. They will develop and maintain close working relationships with DIT offices and colleagues and other UK stakeholders such as the FCO, British Council and DfID. They will also undertake business travel from time to time.



Roles and responsibilities:

  • Support the Regional Manager; manage office functions and the necessary administrative work in line with internal guidelines.
  • Record business interactions and customer / stakeholder information on Invest Northern Ireland’s CRM and management systems.
  • Prepare reports for submission to the Regional Headquarters on budgets and outputs.
  • Brief Northern Ireland businesses and respond to enquiries. Undertake market research and provide Northern Ireland companies with the relevant market information and support required to make informed business decisions and achieve success in the Sub-Sahara region.
  • Plan, arrange, deliver and attend promotional events, trade missions and exhibitions.
  • Co-ordinate client visits (including Ministerial delegations) to the region and provide logistical support.
  • Assist the wider teams and colleagues in the Regional Headquarters, Northern Ireland offices and other International offices as required, including specific assignment, PR work; provide market data and administrative duties.

Support the annual budget preparation process and monitor expenditure.


  • Experience of undertaking market research, analysing data, prepare reports and presenting information to clients.
  • Previous experience in a client facing role and/or organising business/marketing events.
  • Knowledge of the South African business environment and an awareness of the specific issues relating to doing business in the region.
  • Excellent written and spoken English;
  • Strong IT computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office, internet search and social media).
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to initiate and maintain a wide range of working relationships.
  • The ability to work quickly, reliably and proactively with attention to detail and limited supervision.

Working patterns:

Part time position (3 days/21 hours), with same working hours as office in British Trade Office in Johannesburg but flexible while travelling, subject to itineraries.

The British High Commission pays in full for the Key Care Plus option on Discovery Health for staff including spouses/partners and dependants.

Once you have successfully completed your probation the British High Commission will contribute 9% of your monthly salary to a Provident Fund.
