The British Embassy in Bucharest is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic, defence and consular interests overseas. The British Embassy has opened a new round of its internship programme and is looking to recruit for one position to start in April 2018. The internship will be a 6 months full-time position attached to the Defence section.

 The programme will offer opportunities for personal development such as:

  • Tailored on the job training and individual personal development plan;
  • Mentoring by a British diplomat;
  • Exposure to high-level events;
  • Opportunities to participate in cross-team projects and acquire new skills in areas such as: Strategic Thinking, Communication and Influencing, Collaborating and Partnering, Seeing the Big Picture, Demonstrating Resilience.

 Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Researching and drafting reports on political and defence developments and correspondence as required;
  • Attending and reporting on defence and security conferences and seminars;
  • Arranging and supporting visits of UK officials to Romania;
  • Translation from English to Romanian and vice versa;
  • Assisting with defence communications and media plans;
  • Contributions to team events/activities;
  • Accompany Defence Attache for events and meetings.
  • Excellent command of English (indicated by certificates or graduation of an English-speaking academic programme) and Romanian (oral and written);
  • The completion of an undergraduate/bachelor university degree (an essential requirement for the internship);
  • Good drafting, social media, and organisational skills;
  • Good analytical skills;
  • IT literacy;
  • Flexibility to sometimes work out of office hours and on weekends on exciting projects (compensated by time off in lieu);
  • An interest to develop and seek opportunities by completing tailored training via our Diplomatic Academy programme;
  • Availability for full-time employment for a duration of 6-months from April 2018 to October 2018.

It is desirable that applicants are current Master’s candidates or have recently earned a Master’s degree preferably in Political Science, Defence & Security, European or International Affairs, but not exclusive of other degrees.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for 6 months (35 hours net per week). Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked.

The annual leave entitlement is 21 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Romanian / UK public holidays per year.

Monthly salary is 1,900 RON gross. The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance, and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of 15 working days.

All applicants should have a pre-existing legal status to live and work in Romania. The British Embassy does not facilitate/sponsor visa applications and work permits. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Romanian employment law.
