The British Embassy in Nouakchott has a vacancy for the position of Corporate Services and Consular Officer Grade A2 (L) to start as soon as possible.

Main Purpose of the Job:

The British Embassy in Nouakchott is part of a worldwide network representing British political, development and economic interests overseas.

The British Embassy is fairly new - established in 2018 - but expanding and is seeking a motivated and capable individual to assist with the administrative and diplomatic functions of the Embassy, as well as providing occasional consular assistance to British people in need of help in Mauritania.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delivery of corporate services priorities at the British Embassy;
  • Liaising with the Corporate Services Section at the British Embassy in Dakar, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to manage the Embassy’s budget;
  • Financial management, oversight of estates issues, and managing the Embassy’s relationships with local service providers and suppliers;
  • Handling of parcels, preparation of documents with freight agents;
  • Lead on procurement processes, including supplier optimisation and set up;
  • Requisitioning and receiving of purchase orders;
  • Providing occasional consular assistance and advice to British people in need of help in Mauritania;
  • Act as Diary Assistant to the Ambassador, managing his appointments and setting up meetings;
  • Oversight of the day-to-day functioning of the Ambassador’s Residence;
  • Assist in the drafting and distribution of letters and notes verbales.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate fluently and effectively in English and French (at least B2 English, C1 French). Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication.
  • A relevant degree or a minimum of 3 years of working experience in the relevant field.
  • High-level organisational and coordination skills, including the ability to prioritise, meet deadlines, proactively identify and resolve potential problems.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and proven ability to work both autonomously and in a team.
  • Has initiative, adaptable and the ability to work flexibly both in a small team and individually with autonomy, and able to adapt to new ways of working.
  • Very good level of IT skills and literacy in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
    • Ability to communicate with confidence in Hassanya.
    • Experience working in a similar role with international organisations, embassies, or within the Government of Mauritania.

    The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of 45,000 MRU per month, inclusive of all allowances. However, employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount. 

    In addition, employer CNSS contributions will be made. A 13th month payment is paid with December salary (pro-rata in the first year). There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. The package includes 25 days of annual leave per annum plus public holidays as designated by the Embassy (usually 10-14 days per year).

    This is for a full-time employment, on a fixed term basis for one (1) year subject to a 3 months’ probationary period.

    No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

    Conditioned working hours for the position are 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday. The actual working hours are at the discretion of the Ambassador and depend upon the needs of the Embassy. Standard working hours are from 0900 to 1700 (which includes a 30 minute lunch break) from Monday to Friday. However, given the nature of the role the successful candidate may be required to work outside normal working hours as required. Time off in lieu will therefore be offered when appropriate. The jobholder may work remotely for 1 or 2 days a week, this will be decided based on circumstances.

    The successful applicant will have access to a range of Learning and Development opportunities both in-house, online, regionally and the UK, available to help staff pursue their professional development.  The successful applicant will be required to undertake a number of mandatory trainings.

    The successful candidate will be required to undergo security vetting procedures. Any offer of employment will be subject to the candidate achieving suitable clearances, medical clearance and reference checks.

    Staff members recruited locally by the British Embassy Nouakchott are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Mauritanian employment law.

    Eligibility:

    Applicants must be legally able to work in Mauritania with the correct visa/status or work permit.
