The British Embassy in Lisbon is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. Currently, the Department for International Trade is offering a Trade & Investment Assistant Internship.

The intern will assist in the delivery of the Department for International Trade’s activities in the Defence & Security, Infrastructure, and Transports sectors by providing general support to the Senior Trade & Investment Adviser, identifying relevant opportunities and business partners, answering enquiries about the local market, and designing and managing events.

This internship will provide the successful candidate with a working experience at the level of International Business Development with a unique insight of the role of a Government Agency supporting UK companies to export and invest overseas, and in attracting Portuguese FDI to the British market.

Main responsibilities will include:

Market Demand research - UK EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES

  • Market research – to identify top commercial opportunities;
  • Market research - identify Portuguese market demand in key sectors split by size of Portuguese company (SME/Large companies/% turnover);
  • Identify key UK-Portugal bilateral trade drivers.

Outward Direct Investment

  • To build a database of UK companies operating on Portugal –identify new players;
  • To identify a contact point on those companies;
  • Promote the range of support services provided by DIT to eligible UK based companies.
  • Full professional proficiency in English and Portuguese (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • University degree in a relevant field;
  • Strong analytical skills, notably in the gathering, processing and analysis of statistical data, and critical judgment;
  •  Good communication skills, attention to detail;
  • Good MS Office skills.
  • Good knowledge of the Portuguese economy and business environment;
  • Good awareness of the international economic and business environment;
  • International experience, either by working or studying abroad;
  • Previous experience in organising/managing events.

This is a full-time, 6 months internship contract for 5 working days (35 hours net) per week.

All staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Portugal are subject to local Portuguese employment law as well as internal regulations in force at any given time.

The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Portugal in order to apply.

All applicants should have the right to live and work in Portugal. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.

The Embassy will not consider applications from existing staff who have not successfully completed their probation period or, in the case of staff on temporary contract who have not yet completed two thirds of their contract.
