View Vacancy - JPN - Climate Change and Biodiversity Support Officer A2(L)
Main purpose of job:
This is a great opportunity to be part of the work towards preparations for COP15 in October 2021 and April 2022, and COP26 in November 2021, and their legacy in Japan. The new role will monitor and research climate, nature and biodiversity developments in Japan, contributing to an up to date understanding of the latest picture and working closely with both Embassy and UK COP team colleagues. They will be expected to build networks and support the delivery of events and wider activity aimed at driving forward our top level UK objectives.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
Climate, nature and biodiversity policy (60%)
- Undertake policy research, follow and share details of updates in the UK and Japan with colleagues. Set up and take notes at meetings.
- Identify key stakeholders to engage and set up meetings for senior colleagues.
- Work across climate change, nature and biodiversity teams to ensure coordination of communications and engagement
Visits and Events (30%)
- Support logistics and planning for visits and events. Contribute to briefings as required.
Wider Team Support (5%)
- Support other team members providing cover, advice and additional resource as needed.
Corporate (5%):
- Support funding programme work to delivers wider embassy objectives, proactively working with members of other teams.
- Take on and prepare for a crisis role.
Working patterns:
The British Embassy, Tokyo supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, part-time, remote working, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.
This is a fixed-term position until 31 March 2022.
- Excellent written and communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of Japanese and/or UK climate change and biodiversity policy.
Language requirements:
- Language: Native or Fluent Japanese with strong business-level English
- Level of language required: ideally equivalent of English TOEIC/TOEFL 900; Japanese JLPT1
- A minimum of 1+ year of experience working in a relevant field.
- 1 month salary bonus equivalents payable in June and December
- (Note: Salary may be reduced due to tax status)
- Commuting allowance of up to JPY35,000 per month (paid on an actual cost basis)
- 25 days paid annual leave (calculated pro rata)

- The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals. All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.
