The UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) has overall responsibility for promoting UK trade across the world and attracting foreign investment to our economy. We are a specialised government body with responsibility for negotiating international trade policy, supporting business, as well as delivering an outward-looking trade diplomacy strategy.

DIT USA works closely with DIT headquarters in London, with related agencies in the UK and with representatives of the English Regions and the UK’s Devolved Administrations in North America, to assist North America companies looking to invest in the UK and help UK companies identify opportunities to trade with North America (see www.gov.uk/DIT).

The British Consulate in New York is seeking a qualified Executive Assessment (EA) to support both the Deputy HM Trade Commissioner (DHMTC) and Director of Investment. This is a fast moving environment that requires an individual to be flexible, organised, efficient and the ability to operate at pace. The role reports to the Deputy HM Trade Commissioner and is countersigned by the Director, Investment.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Provide administrative support including organising travel, managing schedules, and providing support on the execution of high level delegations
  • Assist with the organization and execution of networking receptions, events, informational seminars, trade missions, panel discussions, and other initiatives designed to develop business between North America and the UK (both in person activities and virtual ones)
  • Provide secretariat support to the USA Diversity & Inclusion Committee which is Co-Chaired by the DHMTC
  • Run the DIT bonus rounds and produce the monthly newsletter that goes to all staff from the DHMTC
  • Assist with reporting on team management targets and support to the DHMTC and Director of Investment on client relationship management needs. Perform support function on wider team initiatives as requested by the DHMTC
  • Supports the Director of Investment with the delivery of programmes and projects that improve the way DIT promotes inward investment to the UK
  • Arranging meetings, writing reports, handling administrative tasks such as booking flights, hotels and scanning business cards and recording interactions in the organisations CRM system
  • Liaise with both internal teams and external contacts at an executive level
  • Manage and/or support visits by senior UK government officials by securing high-level meetings, organizing activities, and preparing briefing materials
  • Represent DIT and the British Consulate at external functions, occasionally in the evenings or early mornings
  • Undertake occasional travel in the U.S. and the UK

No management responsibility.

Responsible for monitoring and accounting for travel and subsistence spending by the DHMTC and Director, Investment.

  • An Associate's or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • 3 – 5 years relevant experience performing an Executive Assistant role, or similar coordination role preferred
  • Interest and familiarity with both the US and the UK business environments is highly desirable
  • Ability to be proactive, strategic, organized and able to work to deadlines, prioritize and multi-task independently or in support of senior staff
  • Courteous, professional and experienced in dealing with senior level representatives of various organizations
  • Strong communication (oral and written) skills, including excellent research ability, reading comprehension and topical summary skills
  • Ability to provide clear, concise summaries and to respond to ad hoc requests at short notice using databases and other information sources
  • A self-starter - able to work independently and show initiative with limited day-to-day supervision while operating as part of a wider US/UK team (with wide-ranging objectives)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team and often under tight deadlines
  • Attention to detail, good follow up discipline, proof reading skills
  • Numeracy skills /experience tracking budgets
  • Computer literacy in standard Microsoft applications
  • Ability to undertake occasional travel within the US and the UK and to attend early morning and evening events

The candidate will have the ability to avail of internal and external training facilitated and paid for by DIT budget – including a familiarization trip back to the UK (if required).

Flexible working is possible within New York. Possibilities include earlier or later start times in the morning – followed by leaving earlier or later in the evening. Under normal circumstances DIT New York allows employees to work remotely, one-to-two days a week, depending on schedule. (Note: this is not always possible during busy periods, or when there are mandatory staff meetings.   Each week is taken on a case-by-case basis, with clear communication around what’s required to be in the office for, vs. the authorization to work remotely).

Currently, role is completely remote.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
